We had decided to go to Museo de La Nacion on Monday 08/31/09 (well, Ben and I wanted to go; Cathy, not so much). My cousin Mimi came over for a visit around 10am; it was good to see her again. As we were leaving for the museum, her boyfriend came to pick her up and he offered to take us to the museum. Nice gesture. It turned out that Museo de La Nacion was closed that day; all government-run museums are closed on Mondays. Private museums are open every day, but we weren’t interested in going to any of those; besides, their entry fees are higher than the government-run ones. So we took a couple of buses back to Miraflores, headed over to the Artesanales, again, for some more last-minute shopping, then back to the condo to drop the stuff off before going to get some lunch.

Nearby Punto Azul (a cebicheria) was closed, so we asked passersby for another cebicheria and a man directed us to one on Calle Colon (not far from the condo where we had stayed when we first arrived in Lima). At Lobo de Mar Otani Ben and I had Cebiche, Chupe de Camarones

Crack the shell and peel it
(Cray fish soup, with vegetables, rice, yellow potato, and Peruvian corn), and Hueveras (Fried breaded fish egg sacs). Cathy had fried rice. To drink, we had Inca Kola, Fanta, and Kola Inglesa. Everything was delicious, especially the Chupe.

After the meal, we headed over to Metro, a nearby grocery store, to get the last few things we wanted to bring with us: Pisco, bottled Chicha morada, Pisco-filled truffles, and a Turron (for my sister in Miami, where we would stop on our way to Virginia). At the liquor section at Metro, an attendant was very helpful and took the time to explain the different types of Pisco and made recommendations based on what we wanted to do with it, whether drink it plain, use it for Pisco Sours, or mix it with fruit juices. We also bought some desserts and a carton of Chicha morada to mark our last night in Lima and Peru.

We got to the condo and took a break to reflect on the last two hectic weeks we’d had: Reuniting with friends and family, visiting Machu Picchu, the funny/unusual ways things are done in Peru, the FOOD! Ben’s favorite thing on the entire trip

was seeing Machu Picchu in person; Cathy’s was feeding and petting the llamas and alpacas in Awanacancha, Cuzco. For me, it’s a toss between seeing my friends from High School and visiting Machu Picchu. Both brought tears to my eyes, and those who know me would not pick “sensitive” as an adjective to describe me, so both events were pretty significant.

After relaxing for a bit, it was time to get to work and pack all six suitcases and six carry-ons. We were done a bit past midnight. We had to be up at 6am the following morning. The taxi was picking us up at 7am to take us to the airport.
