Machu Picchu is amazing, but really what makes it spectacular is the surrounding mountains and valleys. The whole setting is stunning - you can see why the Incas thought they were close to the gods here. We spent two days here exploring the ruins and the surroundings. Fifteen minutes walk from the main site is the Inca Bridge, this bridge is strung along a sheer cliff face, an incredible feat of engineering. On our first day here we took an hour and a half walk to the Intipunku or the Sun Gate and had superb views down over Machu Picchu itself. On the second day we had a guided tour and the guide was excellent. He explained to us all the different building techniques the Incas had used to withstand seismic activity. This was one of the places we were most excited about in South America and it totally lived up to our expectations. It's one of the places that is so magical you simply have to see it for yourself.
