They say you have to pay x amount of money to get to Machu Picchu. They say you must books months in advance. They say it is all very complicated and you need to sign up with a group.
We arrived at the airport, we met a nice lady with a free map, who got us a free taxi ride to a cheap and nice hostel, where a very nice man met with us and (in english) told us our options for visiting the ruins.
