There has been a strike here in Peru (Cusco area) now for over a week, they are not letting any buses in and out of Cusco and have blocked all major roads with rocks and whatever ever else they could find, we only found out a few days ago about this, as our bus trip to Cusco was for today. We really didn´t have much of an option but to fly to Cusco from Arequipa as they did have direct flights, but this wasn´t going to work either as they were totally booked out. Other option was to fly back to Lima and take a connecting flight to Cusco. Option 2 was to take a bus to Puno then take the back roads by bus through the sacred valley and into Cusco but this was over a 20 hrs trip on a local bus! . . no thanks. Option 3 On our Colca Canyon tour we met a couple of American fellows and another aussie who also wanted to get to Cusco, we told the Aussie if we hired a 4x4 he could come along and share the costs, which he was willing to do, I also had a feeling the

two Americans would have joined us which wouldn´t have been a problem. By hiring a 4x4 we were told we could "run" the blockade during the night, so this meant waiting till the middle of the night and go through the blockade or around the outside of it which was only possible by 4x4...if you made it and didn´t get your vehicle stoned or worse. Option 4 was to catch the bus back to Lima (15hrs) then fly to Cusco. With Guinea pig stomach and only one flight left to Cusco and LAN airlines wanting around $340AU for this flight we had to think about it.

We are now going to fly back to Lima from Arequipa then to Cusco, as it only costs another $100 than what the 15 hour "Urination only" bus would cost. I must give credit and say that the bus trip was very comfortable on the way to Arequipa with Cruz Del Sur in the VIP section and would certainly do it again...but not this week.

One thing though, Telstra should take a good hard look at themselves and get their mobile towers working like they do over here, there are no drop
