For those of you not in the know, that´s a quote from The Emperor´s New Groove, our favourite Disney film. A quote might i add, which i have now heard countless times!!! We arrived in Cusco as a group of 4 and are leaving it back ot our original group of only 2! Cathy and Adam, who we´ve spent almost 3 weeks with, have now left for Ecuador and will be greatly missed. We arrived in Cusco and were immediately pounced on by hundreds of women shouting ´Amiga, amiga... hotel, hotel´. We opted, obviously, for the cheapest one and are still there cursing their money grabbing ways of making it a slightly less cheap hostel!
Cusco isn´t a very big place but certainly big enough and one of the highlights of the city for me (Simon was in the room battling with his bowels at the time) was the main market. It´s only got food and drink but the colours and smells are both amazing and revolting all at the same time! There´s these juice stands where the women again shout ´Amiga´at you and try to blend something for you. In their defense, the fruit all looks pretty fresh
and if i wasn´t just getting over the last bout of food poisoning i might have tried it! The fruit and veg stands are cool, even if none of the fruit would pass western hygiene standards and the meat stands are nothing short of disgusting! Who would buy meat there i don´t know! We saw a whole pig (skinned) and something with enormous balls but we didn´t endeavour to find out what it was! One of the lowlights of the city, however, has to be the never ending cries of ´massage´which go up as you walk down the streets (they do mean actual massages for the record, although we think one of them offered Simon sex)! Apparently a lot of tourists enjoy a budget massage in Cusco after the Inca trail (we are, however, too poor to partake in such luxuries even if they do only cost 25 soles - a measly 4 pounds)!
We haven´t really done much in Cusco apart from explore a bit, eat, drink and prepare for our jungle trip. So far Peruvian food has turned out to be gross but luckily there is an Irish pub, two British places and a French sheesha bar to help us out! Seeing as how we haven´t got drunk since the salt flat tour we decided that our livers deserved a work-out and we headed for a night on the town Cusco style! We started in our sheesha bar (where else) and then moved on to somewhere with an open mike night, which as you can imagine had mixed results - mostly good. Then we went all crazy and went down to where the real party´s at! We ended up in a ´club´called Mythology, which was poo but we did meet our friends from BA, and swiftly moved on to Mama Africa´s. Apparently it´s the place to be in Cusco and it made for a very good night with a wicked mix of music (i think) and some great company. We finally wandered back t our hostel at 6:30 am and got greeted by the owner who smiled knowingly and muttered something about ´vacaciones´!
We had fun in Cusco - a great place for parties if a bit touristy for our liking... massage?
