I rolled out of bed this morning about 11am. I was feeling surprisingly Ok, luckily last night I had stuck to the same drink most of the night and at the end I was drinking water! We decided to get some fresh air so went for a walk around the main square and headed to a cafe for some much needed breakfast and coffee. We needed to be more awake as we had booked to go horse riding round some Incan ruins in the afternoon.
The guide for the afternoon picked us up and we headed to some ruins know as SaqsayWaman which sounds like sexy woman when you say it! Me, Ann and Sarah weren´t feeling very cultural after last night and we were struggling to pay attention to the guide. We decided to take silly photos and stay unoticed at the back of the group. The ruins were quite good (what I heard of them!) There was a group of stones in the wall which well placed to look like a puma paw so we took some stupid photos with that! The whole place was shaped in a way that looked like a pumas teeth. The puma was
a sacred animal in Incan times, some people say that Lake Titikaka is shaped like a puma....I can sort of see it but I have my doubts!
There was also a slide in the rocks which was slightly weathered but seeing as my hangover was improving I decided to go down it. Ann chickened out but she was still feeling pretty rough! It was good fun, I picked up more speed than I was expecting and nearly fell flat on my face at the bottom. Luckily the guide was there to hold me up! We went through a little cave too which just reminded me of that film ´The Decent´. It was pitch black and we all went through hanging onto the the person in front. I don´t think I realised actually what I was doing until it was too late! Eventually we made it through and out the other side! It was an experience, especially with a hangover!!
After Saqsaywaman we picked up the horses. They were much smaller than I imagined but i´m grateful for that as I don´t really like horses that much. When we started off Sarahs horse tried to bite Anns leg so she
was scared by that. It didn´t feel the safest place to be horse riding, up rocky hills and across roads. The tour guide was behind us and the horses just seemed to go where they wanted. I´m not really sure how I managed to get my horse moving as the guides were all speaking to them in Spanish! We got to a flat part and my horse started running, I panicked and didn´t know what to do so I just shouted whoa and somehow I got it back to walking! That was pretty scary! After a while I got more used to it but I don´t think at any point I would say I felt 100% safe! We visited some small Incan ruins and had a really nice view of Cusco form the hills. We didn´t get our moneys worth though as we left the horses by the side of the road and had to walk to the last ruins. We were only on the horses for about 45mins so no the best experience! At the time it was scary but to look back on it now makes me laugh!
We went out for dinner in the evening as
there was another birthday in the group. We went to what was apparently the best restaurant in Cusco, it was called incanto. Never go there! The food came out cold and the service wasn´t great and to top it off it gave Ann food poisoning! I went for the safe no meat option so I was fine but as I was sharing a room with her I was up just as much as hshe was so we were both shattered the next day! One good thing about the meal was that we got to try Guinea Pig!! Luckily it didn´t come out looking like one, it had already been chopped up. I got the rib cage which wasn´t the best as it had hardly any meat on it. I didn´t like it anyway (surprise surprise!) so no danger of me frying up some guineas on my return!!
We had to get all packed in this evening as we fly to the jungle tomorrow!
