I arrived in Cuenca on the 4th November (a day after the Independence party). I left on the 8th for Baños. Journey details: Origen/Destination... Loja - Cuenca / Cuenca - Baños Mode of transport... Coach Company... Viajeros & Sucre Express Cost.... $4 & $7 Duration... 5 Hours & 8 Hours Remarks... the trip from Cuenca to Baños was fine. I had to change at Ambato but this wasn't a problem. The first trip from Loja really wasn't fun though... in true South America style the bus was packed beyond capacity and I had the pleasure of some fat guy's ass in my face for the majority of 5 hours. Pleasant. When I arrived in Cuenca it was dark and raining... the worst possible conditions to arrive in a city that you've never been to before. I ... read more

Sorry for the strong title but Cuenca was rough! Vanessa (my host sister) and I left on Thursday night at midnight and arrived in Cuenca at 8:30 AM on Friday. We took a cab to our hotel and left our luggage there. Then we took a cab to the Museo del Banco Central. I really liked it because it had a huge section on archaeology and then another exhibit of ethnography about the different cultures in Ecuador. This was the best part of the trip so I am really glad we went. We left the museum and walked down to the Rio Tomembamba which is really beautiful. There were some local artists so I looked at some paintings. We walked across a bridge to an outdoor artisan market and bought a few things. A cab then ... read more

The fiesta in Cuenca has already begun. Bands fill the street with the sound of music, fireworks illuminate the sky and people are everywhere. The city is packed with a mixture of locals, Americans and Europeans all ready to take part in the festivities. Cuenca is Ecuador's third largest city and Nov. 3rd is their independence day, an excuse to party and set off fireworks much like in the USA. With cobble stone streets and beautiful churches, Cuenca is somewhat reminiscent of somewhere in Europe. The people are friendly and the small markets offer inexpensive local goods, from panama hats and alpacan sweaters to leather crafts and jewelry. We arrived in Cuenca yesterday and after being turned down by a few hotels, full on account of the fiesta, managed to book the last remaining room in ... read more

From Alausi to Cuenca the local bus raced thru the countryside as it picked up passengers on high roads, in deep valleys and in barely lit towns. The setting sun put on a magnificent display of pink and fuchsia reflected on the low lying clouds. As the bus went around peligroso curves, emerged from behind mountainous hills and dipped into valleys, the sun played hide and seek. There were some tourists on the bus but local passengers filled the empty seats and clogged the aisle from back to front. After six hours the bus arrived at the Cuenca Terminal Terrestre. Seems every town has a Terminal Terrestre. By taxi we found The Casa Naranja. The streets were dead quiet. The Scot women followed right behind. Paul and I took the bigger room. The lady who ... read more

I have a love hate relationship with Cuenca. I love it because it is the best city in Ecuador. It´s not even close. I hate it because we studied so long in Quito instead of Cuenca. People in southern Ecuador are very friendly. Our cabbie even said our spanish was good. I guess comments like that don´t hurt when you are working for tips, but he was still the nicest cabbie of the trip. The city is much more beautiful than Quito and the European influence is apparent. It was nice to be able to walk around at night and not have to worry about much. Our room in the hostal had a map of the USA. We scratched out Columbia, Missouri and circled Sacramento, Kansas City, and Lawrence. We are sooooooo cool. Parque Nacional Cajas ... read more

I’m really using some licence here, quoting yet again from that famed authority Lonely Planet, but they certainly got it right this time. We basically have some time to kill prior to our Galapagos cruise, and Cuenca was a great place to just chill out for 5 days. It is a big enough city (400,000 pax, #3 in Ecuador) that you are not running into the same people all the time as you stroll around, but it doesn’t have the hustle and bustle traditionally associated with big cities. More importantly, in the central part of the city where we stayed, it has narrow cobblestone streets, white-washed red tile buildings, and many plazas, generally backed by old domed churches. Furthermore, it lies on the banks of a very attractive river, where women still wash their clothes ... read more

Ecudor - Cuenca and Quito We had decided before arriving in Ecuador, that we would not stay long. And as the heading says.... we spent 6 days!! We began in Cuenca, which is the third largest city and it is a beautiful one, with less crime associated with it! The first night we went to a hotel recommended by a taxi driver as being the cheapest ....... it was very cheap at $4 a night each, but also pretty terrible! The floors were sticky, the room was anything but hygenic and the night security guy seemed a bit nuts! Needless to say we began our search for somewhere else the very next morning! We scoured the city and funnily enough the last place we checked was right across the road from the first place, was also ... read more
