Used the local buses again today but they weren’t as busy. I ventured to the Plaza de Torro with the usual people (Jack, Teale, Tom, Jac, Jay). We bought our tickets the previous day for $15 and were seated in the top section about 3 rows from the back. The sun was blaring down on us and due to the malaria tablets we were burnt in the first 30 minutes, no fun at all!

First round the clown matadors come out and take turns teasing and firing up the bull. (This was the only round I could watch in full!) The second round three matadors come out with fancy knife things and jump in the air 2 metres to stab the bull in the lungs. This begins the killing of the bull. Next comes out horses with armour on and a matador on top with a long spear. The bull charges at the horse and digs his horns into the side. At this stage the matador on the horse stabs the bull in the lungs and jabs it around in there. After this the bull is becoming tired and its tongue is hanging out trying to breath. Finally the main matador comes out to finish the bull off. He makes the bull chase him around the ring and then finally stabs him in the heart. Then a little unknown man comes and makes sure the bull is dead by stabbing the brain. There were six rounds of this in three hours, so six bulls were killed 😞

Inhumane killing but it was good to experience the culture of Ecuadorian people. Funny story to take your mind of the bulls… in one of the rounds a person from the audience jumped over the barrier and grabbed a red flag from one of the matadors and rang into the ring WITH the bull. He started running at the bull waving the red flag! The police and security men then ran in to pull the guy out but saw the bull and ran out of the ring quicker then they ran in!! Finally they dragged him out of the ring and took him away. At the end of the day, everyone jumped into the bull ring to take photos, so we did as well!!

My birthday the day after, so we decided to have a birthday dinner at McDonalds. Teale had bought me a birthday table cloth from Super Maxi to use on the table. Afterwards this doubled as a birthday cape. Thanks Teale you’re awesome 😊
