On Sunday, November 13 I got up early and caught a bus out of Chugchilan headed for Latacunga. I was comfortable for about five minutes. Then a mother and her horrendously carsick child demanded the seat next to me. I endured four hours of vomiting and screaming. After the Dominican Republic, its nothing new, but still as annoying as ever. In Latacunga I changed buses and headed for Baños, a small tourist town famous for its hot springs. It sits on a massive volcano. In fact, four years ago the Ecuadorian government evacuated the entire town because volcanologists (is that really a profession? I should check that out before I go back to school) said it was about to blow. It never did, but you can see what chaos it would have caused by checking out ... read more

I made my way to Latacunga, a rather gloomy town three hours south of Quito. There was absolutely nothing to do there, so I stayed in and watched Mexican Telenovelas. I woke up early the next morning eager to leave before I became extremely depressed. Latacunga just wasn´t going to be the great start to my epic adventure. I hopped on a bus and headed for the Black Sheep Inn, an ecolodge that recently won the Smithsonian Best Ecotourism Site, or at least they told me that. On the way I stopped in Saquisili to check out a famous indigenas market; most of the venders were selling bananas, fried food, or some kind of indigenas crafts. To be honest though, I´ve never been a big fan of markets. I think Dajabon killed any curiousity I once ... read more

Hi everyone About 2 weeks ago, i went to Riobamba with the rest of the school to go on the devils nose train ride. Riobamba was pretty quiet and hasnt much to do with the best place in town for food doubling as the best nightclub. However did find an ecuadorian rock bar? Apparently ecuadorion rock consists of a crooner belting out cheesy love songs. We found that the train was not running from riobamba and that we would have to pick up the train from Alausi. Bit gutting as the best bit of the journey is between riobamba and alausi. Anyway after getting up ridiculously early to catch the bus for the train we arrived in alausi at about 9a.m. For the journey along the devils nose everyone sits up on the roof of the ... read more

¡Hola Amigos! We made it to Ecuador! After a pretty uneventful trip from Durango to Denver to Miami, where we managed to dodge Wilma, we made it to Quito, the capital of Ecuador. Also home to 1.4 million or so people. We took some time to get our bearings, and didn´t really do much the first day except walk around and try to nap a little. Our first meal was real Ecuadorian fare, but nothing too odd - we haven´t tried cuy yet (fried guinea pig, a delicacy, for those of you not in the know). Monday we ran some errands, including confirming and paying for our Amazon trip in a couple weeks, and made our way to SAE - South American Explorers Club - where travelers can get some good info on Ecuador. We then ... read more

So, we finally arrived safe and sound in Quito. Met the peeps who will be our truck mates for the next 8 weeks. A really nice bunch, pretty much all of them are on career breaks and 5 of 15 are accountants. What a percentage! So a lot of green, yuppie style travellers let loose on South America! Went to the equator on the first day, this was one of the things I (Becky) really wanted to visit, for some reason get excited about the fact that you can balance an egg on the head of a pin there (as the gravitational force is exactly equal on the equator and so pulls the egg down). After a bonkers bus ride where each bus we got on terminated about 3 stops on, and we had to find ... read more

Hola! Finally put pics on. As you might see from last entry theres a pic of the poeple at school. We´ve lost Chris and the Swedes, they´ve gone to the jungle/rainforest. There is a difference but cannot remember what it is. Ok to keep everyone filled in. Friday finished school and the remaining students at this point everyone except the swedes grabed a cab to the central bus station. Slightly dodgy place but semmed alright until Liz discovered her purse got knicked bummer but mainly lost cards which can be canceled. 4 hours later and few dollars poorer we arrive at banos - named after the towns thermal baths. To put at as ease the drive decided to put a very dodgy version of the texas chainsaw mascre on the bus tv. Got to banos, found ... read more

Sadly, we only had one night available to spend in Banos. Once again, I wish I had more time to explore and visit a location, but it was nice to visit nonetheless. The way people described it previously, I had expected a town dominated by hotsprings, etc., but I was pleasantly surprised by the number of parks and natural areas around the town. Too bad we didn´t have time to explore them more, but we did see plenty of other tourists preparing for, or heading out on some wilderness adventure tours. With our limited time, instead we took in some of the local comforts: a 1 hour full body massage, followed by the spa in the hotel. One of those things that felt a little ridiculously indulgent at first, but was definitely relaxing. Mike had an ... read more

We are now taking a break from travelling and spending about a week in Riobamba in the house rented for Mike's project. The nice thing about this setup is that we don't have to pay for nightly accomodation, and the food is cheaper, although we have to cook it ourselves. And, we can watch movies, and TV shows I brought down with me, on the computer in privacy. The plan was for me to get free room & board in exchange for helping process samples (floatation, cleaning artifacts, etc.). Unfortunately, after my 3rd night here, I haven't been much help. I guess it was bound to happen: I got a little careless, and got sick. The first night I was hit by what I think was an allergic reaction to all the dust in the house, ... read more

Yo! It´s Tuesday night and we´re back at the archaeology sites for the last week...this past weekend was full of adventure. Saturday we all took a quick trip to the town of Sicalpa (home of the arch sites and also the hole Sarah fell into) to visit one of our worker friends for lunch. He had promised to have us over in order to show us how to make Aji (a-hee....a hot salsa) and the peanut sauce which they put over potatoes. The Aji was made by pounding or grinding chilies and tree tomatoes together in a mortar (man, we really have to get one of those things when we come home - "No Nick, we CAN´T bring one home from Ecuador"), and subsequently adding water onions and cilantro to taste. For us Aji is the ... read more

Greetings my friends, tis Rich. well, weve done quite a lot lately, and have finished school. Alas, Equipo de Fausto is no more! Now that i can prove comprehensively that i cannot speak spanish, we have decamped to tena, via baños, for the Kayak school. NMore to cvome on that soon(ish). We left Cuenca in style, and in the same vein that we occupied it........drunk. An al night bender with our favouritwe barstaff playing cards was a good way to see out our time there, but missing most of the last day of class was not, and neither was a nine our bus journey with alcohol poisoning. Hohum. On our last day we visited somwe Inca ruins, where 60,000 people were massacred by the victor after a huge battle of the civil war that raged while ... read more
