¡Hola! Que bueno! Yes, at 6:15 yesterday morning, just in time for sunrise, I summited my fourth major peak in Ecuador - Volcán Cotopaxi, at a breathtaking 5897m. It was the singularly most physically and mentally demanding activity I have ever undertaken and the others are en acuerdo on this point. Was it worth it? Oh yes. Por que? The feeling of achievement I think more than anything. OK - the sunset and moonrise were stunning. And once the moon had gone, the sky was studded with every star. If I wasn´t so delirious at the time then I perhaps could have appreciated it more. It´s difficult to describe the climb to anyone who hasn´t done anything similar. So I´ll try to paint the picture. The refugio is at 4,800m, just over a kilometre below the ... read more

(I´m actually in Machachi, about an hour and a half south of Quito at the moment, but that wasn´t on the list). Got back a few hours ago from a successful summit of Iliniza Norte, a new high at 5126 m 16817 ft. No probs, which bodes well for Cotopaxi on Sunday morning. The hut had a gas heater and stoves (and about 12 people) so it wasn´t too cold at night. The windows didn´t open, though, so there was moss growing inside from all the moisture. Slept on and off from about 8:30pm to 5:20 for breakfast. A combination of altitude, cold (temperature and illness) and dodgy mattress and bed combined to make sleep difficult. Maybe Cotopaxi will be more comfortable (he thinks naively). So no it´s rest time. And tomorrow we also have off. ... read more

This morning when we woke up one of the four guys in our group was feeling sick. He decided he wanted to go to the hospital and so went back to Riobamba. We later found out that he went back to Quito and then home because he felt that he didn’t trust the accuracy of the malaria tests in the hospitals in Quito. He had been travelling in Ecuador prior to our trip and had been in places that had malaria and wasn’t taking any medication. We never heard anything about him so we assumed he ended up being alright. Despite that setback this morning we all had a good breakfast and then took a bus a mile or two to a lodge directly at the base of Chimborazo where we would start our hike. We ... read more

The night before was entirely a travel day from Tiputini back to Quito where slept for the night. This morning we got up early and got onto a bus. Our professor David came with us from Tiputini and was going to go with us to the highlands. First we stopped at Riobamba. There is a new university there and we got a tour of it and then we got lunch. After David took us all to a little store that sold mitts and hats and scarves which we all bought because we would need it in the mountains. We all got back onto the bus and finally got to our destination of Chimborazo, a volcano. Chimborazo is Ecuador’s highest peak. It is considered to be inactive. We stayed at Casa Condor which is shaped to look ... read more

I´m a bit behind in writing about what I´ve been doing so I´ve attached lots of pictures of my trip to Quilotoa. I travelled from Quito to Latacunga, which was another exciting bus adventure. No movies this time! I arrived in Latacunga Tuesday afternoon. As I was sitting on the roof terrace of my hotel looking at Cotopaxi volcano I decided to take a trip the next day to Quilotoa crater. A group from the hotel were going and there was another place free and it seemed a better option than local buses, the back of pick up trucks and walking three hours on a dirt road. When we left Wednesday morning it was raining and I did not expect that the day was going to be all that good, but as we drove up higher ... read more

Decided being the daredevils we are to go white water rafting down the river in Baños. Set off around 9.15 with a group of 6 others. After about 20K we arrived at the start point to find a large contingent of the army practicing jumping off bridges. Got changed in open air huts (seperate boy and girl ones thank god!) and got set to go with our Brazilian guides David and Marcio who spoke hardly any English (eek!). With some basic instructions understood among us (i.e. forward means paddle forward, back, paddle back, forward twice means paddle fast) we got going. All went well, we hit a couple of rapids, we all squealed as we got drenched. Got to another rapid and Mike and I and another girl disappeared off the side! Fun you might think ... read more

Hired a couple of dodgy mountain bikes and cycled down the valley of the waterfalls. First 7k wasn´t very enjoyable. We soon realised we´d be cycling most of the route on a major road. The gears were stiff on Amy´s bike and her chain kept jamming. Slight adjustment using my penknife helped the latter. We´d been told that there were several tunnels through the mountains, each having an alternative route for bikes. However, the first of these did not. It was dark, water poured from the ceiling and the road surface was wet and muddy. Luckily no vehicles passed us in the tunnel, we just got covered in water/mud. When we reached the first waterfall (pictured) our moods improved. It was quite spectacular, falling into the valley below. We paid a dollar each to be ferried ... read more

First full day in Banos we decided to walk up the hillside with Becky and Tim to Bella Vista - a good vantage point to see the town and the nearby active volcano "Tungurahua". The notice board in the hostal warned of a recent mugging on the same route. It described how an old lady had acted as a look out and to beware if seeing one. A later addition to this report by another guest said the walk was fabulous and no trouble. At the entrace to the path a policeman was hanging around. After 5 minutes walking we overtook an old lady, probably aged around 75, draging a small bush up the steep slope. We got a little nervous - I grabbed a rock to defend myself!! Nothing happened and we settled into a ... read more

It was sad to leave the Secret Garden as we've had a great time and met loads of interesting people. However, we were both ready to move on. The taxi to the bus station in Quito dropped us at a nearby roundabout - thanks. We wandered around not knowing where to go until an Ecuadorian familily who were also heading to Banos showed us where to wait. We had been warned that the bus station was a hotbed of crime so kept our bags close. After about 40 minutes a bus arrived and we stored our rucksacs underneath and boarded. A man walked down the bus counting people. I was sat on the opposite side to Amy checking our rucksacs were safe. I was instructed to take my actual seat and the man confirmed our destination ... read more

Hi there! I started to write this blog in Baños (a small holiday town in the south of the high Sierra) on Sunday, but events overtook me and now I am in Quito, waiting to go to the Galapagos islands very early tomorrow morning. It all seems a bit surreal, as I can´t let myself believe I am really going until I get there... So, what have I been up to recently? As I mentioned above, I spent last weekend in Baños with six other volunteers from La Hesperia. We left on Friday evening and spent Saturday cycling towards Puyo, 60km away along a beautiful road that follows a river with lots of waterfalls. The views were amazing, and we had great fun, stopping to admire the waterfalls and eat our lunch. But most of us ... read more
