Riobamba probably deserves more investigation than I was willing to give it based on first impressions, so apologies to anyone who went there and loved it. Initially we'd planned to spend a couple of days there, we're not fond of turning up to a place and setting straight off the next day. Might be laziness but I prefer to think of it as giving every place a fair chance. Anyway we're on holiday!! Riobamba didn't capture either of our imaginations though, and as such we decided to take the much lauded train around the Devil's Nose (Nariz del Diablo) and carry on south directly. The train around Nariz del Diablo was apparently something of an engineering feat although these days is a tourist attraction and nothing more. You can't travel anywhere in Ecuador by train other ... read more

Wednesday I sunbathed in the morning, getting a bit burned, then hired bikes with Leoni and Karin; two Dutch girls, plus Jay from London: all three had been part of the mass exodus from Quito. We were joined by David, a 30 year old from Israel, and Jean-Phillipe, a boy from France. We cycled for hours, up and down hills on a route out of town that followed the waterfalls. It was absolutely exhasting, my poor legs took a hell of a lot of punishment, but the scenery: gorgeous green mountains and smoking volcanoes, made up for the pain. We stopped regularly to see the falls and take pictures; one of the waterfalls even tumbled down onto our path, so hot and sweaty, we stripped off and stood under it - lovely! Got to the end ... read more

On arriving in Riobamba we checked into the Hotel Estation... A large old hotel with paper thin walls and large wooden hallways which seemed to have been designed with a concert halls acoustic in mind and therefore made a great job of amplifying any noise in the building - most of which seemed to come from a large Equadorian male in the room next to ours...... At 5.00am the next day we rose, threw on our clothes and after a quick bite to eat headed for the train and ticket office. The railway which incorporates the Devil´s Nose and Alausi Loop was built nearly 100 years ago and at its time was a major feat of engineering. It was built to connect Quito with Guayaquil on the coast, which meant starting the track at around 2800m ... read more

Hi everyone About 2 weeks ago, i went to Riobamba with the rest of the school to go on the devils nose train ride. Riobamba was pretty quiet and hasnt much to do with the best place in town for food doubling as the best nightclub. However did find an ecuadorian rock bar? Apparently ecuadorion rock consists of a crooner belting out cheesy love songs. We found that the train was not running from riobamba and that we would have to pick up the train from Alausi. Bit gutting as the best bit of the journey is between riobamba and alausi. Anyway after getting up ridiculously early to catch the bus for the train we arrived in alausi at about 9a.m. For the journey along the devils nose everyone sits up on the roof of the ... read more

We are now taking a break from travelling and spending about a week in Riobamba in the house rented for Mike's project. The nice thing about this setup is that we don't have to pay for nightly accomodation, and the food is cheaper, although we have to cook it ourselves. And, we can watch movies, and TV shows I brought down with me, on the computer in privacy. The plan was for me to get free room & board in exchange for helping process samples (floatation, cleaning artifacts, etc.). Unfortunately, after my 3rd night here, I haven't been much help. I guess it was bound to happen: I got a little careless, and got sick. The first night I was hit by what I think was an allergic reaction to all the dust in the house, ... read more

Yo! It´s Tuesday night and we´re back at the archaeology sites for the last week...this past weekend was full of adventure. Saturday we all took a quick trip to the town of Sicalpa (home of the arch sites and also the hole Sarah fell into) to visit one of our worker friends for lunch. He had promised to have us over in order to show us how to make Aji (a-hee....a hot salsa) and the peanut sauce which they put over potatoes. The Aji was made by pounding or grinding chilies and tree tomatoes together in a mortar (man, we really have to get one of those things when we come home - "No Nick, we CAN´T bring one home from Ecuador"), and subsequently adding water onions and cilantro to taste. For us Aji is the ... read more

Whew! We have been suitably chastised by a number of you for not writing often enough...and the year has just begun. What a week. The first Friday of work was a blast...apparently the town we are working in has a week-long fiesta celebrating the independence of the area - "The Fiesta De Colta". This fiesta just ended on August 2nd after 10-14 days of havoc. That friday (the 20th) we finished work with the field crew and decided to share some beers with everyone....well, 30 beers later we exited the site feeling refreshed, and managed to literally walk into a very colourful parade down the Pan-American highway and through the centre of town. Our Ecuadorian friends decided a parade just wasn´t a parade without a couple boxes of fruity wine and the liquor of choice down ... read more

Hola Amigos! We arrived at Quito around 11 pm on the 15th, and were promptly met by our archaeologist friends - this was a good thing because as you step out of the airport EVERYONE´s whole family is there to greet them...this creates a bizarre scene of crowds yelling and cheering on both sides. We didn´t do much that night, but the next day (Saturday) we walked around the "new town" aka the "gringo district" and saw the local market. Quito is a very beautiful city which is surrounded by mountains and low rolling hills. In fact, it seemed at first that the airport appropriated the only flat strip of land in the whole region! There is so much history in the architecture, yet within the new town there are many eclectic modern bars and restaurants ... read more
