Got back from the Galapagos and had a dinner with everyone from the boat. We all ended up in the same hotel which was great! After a week of sharing a cabin where only one person could be in the cabin at one time (unless the other was in bed!). I soon had all my belongs sprawled out all over the place and a huge pile to send to the wash. Had to continue to take motion sickness tablets as was now feeling land sick - no swaying was causing a problem! I was not the only one and we decided that the only thing to do was to go out and have a couple of cocktails with dinner. Strong cocktails, being up at 6 am and altitude effects had us all yawning and in bed ... read more

Yesterday we survived the Devil´s nose train ride from Rio Bamba to Alaussi, it was awesome. Most of the way we were watched by the local children because everybody buys lollipops to throw to them. We spent a small fortune on lollies, as you throw them the children come from everywhere to collect them. The train climbs up through the mountains on the narrowest tracks I have ever seen and crosses some bridges which I would think twice about walking over. When we got to the devils nose the drop to the side of the train must have been about 300 feet straight down. We did have one minor mishap, there was a landslide and a rock landed on Bev ( don´t worry it was only about the size of an egg and made of pumice ... read more

Ok, so after arriving from Baños we spent one night in Riobamba in a hostel called Los Shyris near the train station. We bumped in to Stuart, an Australian guy that we did the Guagua hike with in a restaurant that night. He was in Riobamba for the same reason as us, to do the Devil's Nose train journey to Alausi - sitting on the roof of the train. This is a train run pretty much solely for tourists and one of the few (maybe only) train routes still in operation in Ecuador. The restaurant that we met Stuart in wasn´t great so we warned him against it (a far from accurate lonely planet recommendation). Next morning he kept us two seats on top of the train, we got there for about 6am, a bit later ... read more
