Other than the tittle suggest this won't be about travel impressions, but about the impressions you leave behind. The impressions fellow travellers have off you. Fleeting impressions, and often wildly inaccurate. It's been on my mind for a while now, ever since San Blas actually where I seem to have made quite an interesting impression on some. I'm not saying that who I was there wasn't the real m... Read Full Entry

Well put! Even outside of travel, in the day-to-day, we have so many parts of ourselves that seem to show themselves depending on the season, the company, or even the light of day. Really enjoyed this blog.

Muchas gracias
Yeah, you are right it isn´t limited to travel, though probably more pronounced when travelling since you tend to meet so many more people of all walks of life

Travel chameleons
I think that is what a true traveller does, changes/adapts to any situation as required. I always feel like I'm being my true self, but I've been accused of being everything from sullen to ridiculous. C'est la vie. Tayrona pictures are lovely, enjoy Bogota!

Chameleon
Nicely put, I think you are probably your true self, just as I am, but the true self can´t be captured in one word.

The other thing I know about you...
is the unusual way you earn travel money! And of course, your love of your family.
8th November 2014

True
With family being the most important of the two for me. My ´job´ is just a way to earn money, I need it, but other than that money means very little to me...

Performativity is what you speak of.
Our most personal acts are continually being scripted by hegemonic social conventions and ideologies, for they are a mode of "self-making" through which we become socially intelligible. Or as Shakespeare would say, "all the world's a stage". And we act differently with different casts, different scenes and in different plays.

Can´t argue with Shakespeare
I had forgotten that quote, but it´s very apt

Who is that true self?
I so agree with what you, Michelle and Andrea have said about our chameleon-like, multifaceted, adaptable true selves. Well said also about the choice of where to put our travel resources--those of us who skip pricey restaurants and partying will enjoy many more adventures--you may even make it to the Galapagos. So many possibilities when one is open.

Maybe
But I am not counting on the Galapagos anymore, even if I do nothing at all from now on it will be nigh impossible... Than again, who knows?

True speak
Very wise words Ralf, I can fully identify with everything you've said here. I can also enjoy partying every once in a while but it is definitely not my priority when traveling. I probably come across unsociable and arrogant to some people ... but who cares. That's the good thing about the freedom of traveling..you have no obligations, nothing to live up to - it's just you. Kinda miss that feeling ... Cheers and enjoy your trip!

Hey Philipp
Thanks for the comment. Yep, definitely true about the freedom of travelling and having no obligations or anything to live up to.
