My dear friends, this is a short letter to a twitter publication that went viral. We couldn´t help but notice a publication which again encourages the use of stereotypes. A move that I do not understand since you did it just after your country had won the match against Spain, shouldn´t you be happy and rejoiced by the triumph instead of favoring the existence of stereotypes? I mean, we did not play against you on the worldcup, so why us?
I thought all countrymen, having the chance to compete in such a glorious event -making our world just ONE-, will believe themselves to be
quite fortunate after a victory. Just to give you an example of how passionate we feel about football, this morning, I woke up at 5:30 and from my window, I could see my neighbours raising our national flag, as we are all expecting the next match of Colombia, which will take place in one hour´s time, let alone when we win, it´s madness. When our nationals stand out in sport, culture or art, we all celebrate, just look at the amount of supporters on the Brazilian pitches, every time we are playing, the news state we outdid the very Brazilians in names of supporters even in Brazil, that´s maybe more important...
I don´t know whether it is us not having a good sense of humour, it might be, but sadly, people might overlook great things we have achieved or the people that stand out in our country: Our late Nobel prize, Gabriel García Marquez, our presidents, our athletes, cyclists like the winners of the Giro de Italia, our professional graduates, students, children, singers like Shakira, Juanes. By the way, Shakira, a role model, is also another UNICEF ambassador but if you do some research, you will see that she does not exhibit these irresponsible behaviours.
I have to admit that we have dealt with this drug problem for ages, but we do not use drugs as much as other countries do but I must remind you that in Colombia, the drugs are not legalized. So, you might wonder where more people are likely to use them. Incidentally, have you visited my country?
We´d be very pleased to have you one day in Colombia so that you can change the image you have about us. Just as in this travelblog, it is by travelling and getting interested in other cultures that we can overcome those preconceptions that, if overlooked, might turn into racism.
More than drugs, our land is passion, happiness; we have lots of problems, that is right, but which country doesn´t? and for your information, we are, at present, undergoing a vital peace process, which brings us excitement and optimism, to leave all this in the past.
Our country has been campaigning for a lot of time to change the stigma we have around the world. In fact, there are many Europeans who come for holidays here and they can tell you a bit about what their takes on our people are.
Thank you! Gracias!
