Our Arrival We arrived on the bus from Popayan at 4:30pm. We caught a bus from the bus stop outside the terminal in the middle of the terminal road next to the taxi rank at 4:45pm. The bus C11 cost COP$1,200 and takes a loopy 20 mins to get into town up calle 18 near carrera 21. Unfortunately for us we did get on a C11 bus but it was heading in the wrong direction. After about 5 mins of sitting there going "I'm sure it will loop back towards the town soon" it became apparent it wasn't. We headed further up into the hills as everyone got off the bus. A couple of policemen boarded the bus and checked everyone's ID's. The road turned rougher into what seemed to be a four wheel drive track and the houses got remoter as every passenger bar us got off the bus. There was nothing we could do apart from wait until the end of the route for the bus to turn around and drive back. I was getting really worried because if there was any town in Colombia to get on the wrong bus and be heading alone into the countryside
this was definately the worst. Fortunately we reached our end destination, the bus turned around and the driver asked where we wanted to go. We told him the centro and we were soon on our way back into town. After a 45 min detour we reached the bus terminal again and headed into town. 20min later we were in the middle of town.
Where We Stayed Hotel Atenas - calle 19 and 21B. COP$25,000 for a nice double room with private bathroom with hot water, TV and internet. Hotel is on 2nd floor with buzzer entry and 24 hour access. Quoted price was COP$30,000 but she went down to COP$25,000 straight away.
What We Did Looked at the many City churches. Tried to find the museo del carnaval but failed miserably, I don't believe Cll19 and Cra42 actually exits.
Mostly just got caught up on internet stuff before heading to Ecuador.
Aboout Pasto There is not too much to see in Pasto so unless you are mad into churches I'd probably recommend just heading on through to Ipiales.
The weather was cold and miserable when we
were there.
There is a tourist information office on carrera 25 and calle 19 on the corner of Plaza de Narino which has handy maps (although the points of interest marked on the map don't exactly match their actual destinations but are roughly in the right area).
Where We Ate Unnamed restaurant - calle 19 21-64 opposite BBVA bank. COP$2,500 for soup, a main meal (including fish) and a drink. Accompanying sides weren't as good as normal but I got a whole fish and the price was very good!
There are several fast food restaurants and a supermarket at the back of Centro Commercial Amorel on calle 17 and carrera 21A.
Where We Went Next We went to Ipiales. To get to the bus station we caught the C11 bus from Calle 17 and carrera 22 for COP$1,300 each. It arrived at the bus terminal 15 mins later. As you enter the terminal the first windows are for the big buses so keep walking and there are more windows for the minibuses.
We went with Autopanamericano to Ipiales. First they quoted COP$10,000 but went down to COP$7,000. The minibuses leave when full. We just missed one so had to wait about 20 mins for ours to fill up. There was plenty of room for our bags and us. We left at 9:35am and arrived in Ipiales at 11:20am.
