I arrived at Valparaiso around 1pm after a 2hr bus ride from the city. The sights from the bus really reminded me of Spain when driving through Catalonia or Aragon or Castilla. To get to the hostel I had to go up in one of the famous Ascensores (lifts) here. There is a a few here and it's like a funicular but shorter and much more steep. El cerro Conception is one of the most famous areas here, and Valparaiso was declared World Heritage site a few years ago. Even some of the Ascensores are declared historical monuments. I went for a walk around el Cerro where I enjoyed the nice colourful buildings and some views of the city (again not too good due to the foggy atmosphere). Then I took the lift down for a walk in the city. Agan this place really reminds me of Spain a few years ago with the old cars, buses and houses. One thing I{ve noticed here and in Santiago is the huge amount of stray dogs in the streets. I walked around Av Brasil, the Britannic Arch, Victory Square, the Cathedral (nothing special compared to some of our cathedrals in Spain), the Turri
Clock, Sotomayor Square, the Prat Monument, and Aduana to name a few, so again I was very tired and at the end, so early to bed.
The following day I got up early again as couldn't sleep - what's wrong with me? On my way to Viña del Mar I stopped first at el Mercado Cardonal, full of street stalls selling fruit and veggies mainly. Then I took a bus to Viña del Mar, but should have taken the train as the bus driver looked like he was in a hurry! The bus left me by the casino in the seafront so I walk all along the beach passing the ruins of el Muelle Vergara, which still has a little bit of charm. Today was also foggy but you can still see Valparaiso from here...just. For lunch I had a Chorrillana Espanola another typical dish (french fries topped with steak, egg and onion, with a little bit of chorizo as well, hence the Española name. Quite basic but quite nice I walked all along Avenida Libertad, passing by la Iglesia de las Carmelitas, el Puente Libertad, Av Valparaiso, Wulff Castle, Ross Castle and the flower clock. Then back to the
hostel to get my backpack to get onto a bus for 12 hrs to Pucon (this will be my first, but not the last long distance buses I'm going to take).
