It's 5:30 A.M. and I just got back home from going out. It never ceases to amaze me, the type of night life here. It is truly like none other. When we left at around 5, there were people cooking burgers on the grill in the middle of the plaza, selling sandwiches, and just having a good time. It made me think "Wow...does no one know it's 5 in the morning?!". I love it. :-)
I went out with Bri, Claire, and some really cool Chileans from Claire's
Intercambio de Idiomas (language exchange) group. They were super warm people. Like always, we had to meet up somewhere first to wait until the
discotecas came alive so we decided to go to Matiz which is a very popular bar for the younger crowd in Valpo. Matiz is known for their cheap drinks so people were literally lined up outside waiting for people to leave so they could come in. Anyway, I just met Fernanda tonight and we already have a shopping date for next week and her cousin invited me to her
asado (cook-out) at her house in like 2 weeks to celebrate something concerning her degree. Who lives like this?!?!
It's so amazing! I feel like I'm literally making friends ALL over the place!! So after leaving Matiz, we walked to this
discoteca called Bar Arena. It was a funny name because it literally means "sand bar". I didn't really get it. Well, there was a HUGE line...that's how you know a club is good, and as we were waiting some other ISA students walked up! We greeted each other cordially then that's when some man led us to the front of the line, didn't look at our IDs, and proceeded to let us in for free! And the Chileans we were with got in free too just for being with us. It was kind of like racism except backwards. I definitely wasn't complaining because free stuff is awesome but I still don't understand why we got in for free just for being
gringos. I think it sends a bad message. I hate that so many people were waiting in line and saw us get in easily like that because I feel like we are in NO way more "important" because we're foreign. It was very interesting...
The place was RAVING! I had such a good time. There were
bubbles, they hosed us down with water, they tossed glow sticks, and there were people dancing on the floor AND on the stage. We danced on stage! I danced with a few cuties but here you have to look away because if you don't, they WILL go in for the kill and try to kiss you. I'm trying to become more accustomed to not maintaining eye contact with my dance partners! It's so funny! The place was big and maze-like. There was a bar where you enter and you have a choice to go upstairs or downstairs to the basement. In the basement there were flashing lights and this big pit with sand where some people were dancing...hence the "sand bar"! Then from there, there was another staircase where you could go up to another area, or upstairs again to another 3rd floor. While I was jamming some dude tried to awkwardly pull me off the stage. I wasn't having that! He was probably super
curado.
Another great night in my hill city. :p
