Yes, vandaag gaat het toch door: onze excursie naar Vina del Mar en Valparaiso. En ze zijn zelfs op tijd…
Valparaiso ligt zo’n 120 km ten westen van Santiago, aan de kust. Dus eerst 1,5 uur met het busje…. Maar onze gids is goed en bestookt ons met informatie over Santiago, Valparaiso, Vina del Mar en Chile. Zo vertelde hij dat Chili 4 exportgoederen heeft, te weten: nr. 1 = koper (en dus niet wijn, wat we allemaal dachten…), nr. 2 = hout, nr. 3 = agricultura en nr. 4 = fruit en groente. Daarna dus pas de wijn…
We zijn eerst naar Vina del Mar gereden. Dit is een vrij ‘jonge’ stad (sinds rond 1840). Hier hebben we een heel mooi uitzicht over Valparaiso vanaf de heuvels. Dan door naar het openbare park Quinta Vergara, waar een museum is en een heel groot, modern amfitheater. Weer het busje in en op pad naar het museum Fonck waar een originele Moai beeld staat: de eerste die we deze vakantie zien, en niet eens op Paaseiland!!
Nadat we Vina del Mar verlaten hebben gaan we richting het strand van Renaca, waar we weer een mooi uitzicht hebben op Valparaiso maar dan vanaf
het strand.
Nu krijgen we toch wel een beetje trek (het is onderhand 2 uur/half 3) dus rijden we door naar Valparaiso waar we in de haven kunnen genieten van heerlijk seafood, met uitzicht op de oude HrMs Witte de With (waar Dirk nog op gevaren heeft…!). Na de lunch krijgen we nog een rondtour door de stad Valparaiso om daarna door te rijden naar het museum van La Sebastiana (het huis van nobelprijswinnaar voor literatuur Pablo Neruda). Een laatste drankje en dan is het alweer tijd om terug te rijden naar Santiago, waar we rond 6 uur arriveren, maar doordat iedereen naar huis wil na het werk is het er chaotisch druk met auto’s zodat we rond 8 uur pas in het hotel zijn. En aangezien we vannacht om kwart over 3 opgehaald worden gaan we maar meteen slapen….

Vina del Mar is popularly known as the Ciudad Jardin (Garden City) for its manicured subtropical boulevards lined with palm trees and beautiful expansive parks. Visitors are greeted with the colorful, blooming Av Marina’s Reloj de Flores (Clock of Flowers). The cleanliness is in sharp contrast to the jumble of neighboring Valparaiso.

Undoubtedly the most unique city in Chile, and one of the most unusual in all Latin America, Valparaiso - ‘Valpo’ for short - has long been one of the continent’s best kept secrets. Ignored by many Chileans, who prefer the more mundane charms of Vina del Mar next door, people are now beginning to catch on - especially since the city was named a Unesco World Heritage site in 2003. ascensores (funicular elevators) creak at an improbable angle up to a very different city above. These tumbling chaotic
cerros (hills), with their steep labyrinthine roads, crumbling mansions and kaleidoscopic rooftops, will have even amateur photographers snapping on every street corner. It’s not just the stunning
vistas that hit you as you look down to the busy working commercial and naval harbor below; it’s the unique, faded grandeur of the town, and its spontaneous, bohemian charm.
But some visitors shudder at the madly crisscrossing electricity wires above the streets, and find the city run-down and dirty. Others get put off by Valpo’s poverty. Some of the country’s poorest shantytowns stretch up the hills.
