Harbour shot
Valparaiso...not really beach front. It´s a total shipping port..the beaches are in Viña del Mar... So we arrived in Valparaiso after a short and sweet bus ride from Santiago, Chile. We arrived at a cool hostel called El YoYo and started our adventures of the coastal areas of Chile. Valparaiso has all these cool
asensores that are like elevators that go up the hillside. The entire city is built up and up and up into the hills. So there are these elevator things or a LOT of stairs. We used a little of both. The first day we were there we walked around the city, went down into the harbour and just sort of explored. The nice beaches were in the next city ¨Viña del Mar¨or the even posher nicer ones in the city after that - Reñaca. So day #2 was a beach day. And it was hoootttt. And apparently there is a hole in the ozone layer over chile etc. Which made it a little daunting. My face and chest got quite red. Bah - luckily i brought a huuge supply of moisturizer with aloe and cucumber from home (everyone thought i was crazy for packing so much, but it has sure come in handy!! Not that i´m burning alot. But i am in
Fountain in the park
Really pretty park we found in Valparaiso...sat and read here for awhile one afternoon the sun. And you all know me. I´m trying to be good though!! Needless to say, day #3 was not a beach day. We needed a day off that scorching beach! So we headed for the hills. Literally. We just walked...and walked...and did stairs, and more stairs, and more walking - and it was fantastic! We followed these signs to get to a museum - and it was 2.5 km away..so we walked, and walked. and finally got there! And it was Pablo Neruda´s house. He is a very famous Latin American writer and poet. It was pretty cool. Ooh, I forgot to write about Con Con! On day #2 after the beach and front side burn we went two towns over to Con Con, where they apparently had the best seafood in Argentina. So we bused out there and we saw all these horses on the beach! So having just been on million dollar rodeo winning horses we wanted to run again! So we asked them for the fastest ones they had, and asked how far we could go down the beach. They made it sound very awesome. Let me tell you, expectations were shattered. They were the worst
Open Sky Museum
All these cool murals and paintings on this walk around the hills of the city - Lots of stairs...and we got lost a few times.. horses ever. They wouldn't go faster than a fast walk..and they kept trying to turn around to go back to where the stable thing. AND we could only go around this small part of the beach. After about 15 minutes, we decided we'd got some nice pictures out of it..and not much else - so we headed back. And THEN the horses SORT of ran. It was really lame. But we went and ate some pretty yummy seafood - but i wouldn´t say best in argentina that's for sure...
So - after the walking day we went back to the beach! And I was very cautious as to not re-burn my front side. Despite my best efforts..I burnt my back. From top to bottom. Bum too. Bah...I do love that aloe! We had the most amaaazing (this would qualify as possibly the best in Argentina) seafood at this restaurant on the beach in Reñaca. We had these clams baked with parmesan cheese and this yummy fish - i don't remember the name. But it was all delicious!! We also had this MASSIVE mug of beer. I felt like i was in Germany! It was an odd combination. Anyway, We
From the top of the hill ...
to the ocean! Valparaiso has these crazy elevator things that take you up the hillside...or you can take the stairs.. booked our ticket to Mendoza, Argentina and we took the night bus. And let me tell you, it was not comfortable. The seats and legroom and smell were all just fine! It was a nice bus and all, but let me tell you, when your entire back side is burnt - there is nothing that makes those seats comfortable. All I wanted to do was lie on my tummy with aloe and a fan. That didn´t happen - although we did make friends with the customs guy at the border crossing at 230am! He lent Callie his jacket and bought us chocolate so we would remember him. He cracked me up! I´ll write about Argentina next time!
