Happy New Year to everyone! It's been a while since our last entry as we've been dead busy. Now it's nearing the end of our trip, we've been bombing about trying to cram as much as we can in. We left the Lake District and headed down south on the legendary 'Ruta 40'. This 2-day journey takes you south through bleak Patagonia, down to a town called El Chaltén. We did a 6hr hike in El Chaltén with some great guys we met on the trip (Andy, Dave and Juan), and got some great views of Mount Fitzroy that same day whilst leving town for El Calafate. From El Calafate, we went to see the famous 'Perito Moreno' glaciar (30km long and 160m high). It was a full day's trip and was amazing. You get to ... read more

Happy New Year from Puerto Natales, Chile. We had a great time there even if we didn’t do what most people go there for! It turns out that it’s almost impossible to visit the Torres del Paine National Park on public transport and complete a decent day’s walking without staying in the park. Trish insists she is to old for camping (she’s NOT!) and the refugios would have blown our budget completely. Instead we settled for climbing a small mountain nearer to town. We had to pay an entry fee to walk on the land but were promised “coffee and cake” when we came back down. The climb was much tougher than we had expected, but the views were worth every aching muscle. We sat inches from a precipice and ate our lunch before a condor ... read more

Hi Everyone Hope ou are all well and getting ready for Christmas. Now in Chile. went through the frontier border. It´s amazing to see the difference that 130 kms can make. The Chileans are very different to the Argentians. The Argies are getting the vote so far. We will be thinking of you all in our hotel overlooking Torres del Paine and the Serrano lake. Patagonia really is something else so even though we aren´t there yet there is a feeling that the best is even yet to come! We wish you all a Merry Christmas with the a true Patagonian Papa de Navidad (Father Christmas) (see the photo!!) amazing what you can achieve with a coupe of sheepskin chair covers and a borrowed Argentine red jacket. See for yourself!! All the best to all. Lots ... read more

I arrived in Puerto Natales in the evening of the 4th December and, as promised, Michelle was there at the bus stop to meet me. We went straight back to her house as I was so tired and she had got dinner ready and waiting for me! I could get used to that kind of treatment, I can tell you. Michelle lives in a huge, typically Chilean house in that all the walls and floors are not perpendicular and there is not a single right-angle to be seen anywhere. I loved it straight away, and I had my own room, which was a real treat! Despite wanting to stay up and chat with Michelle, I went to bed pretty early that night and didn't wake up until 1pm the next day. Michelle said she had to ... read more

The Navimag ferry has taken me all the way from Puerto Montt in mid-Chile to the far south. The trip took approximately 67 hours, but it seemed to go very quickly. I was warned to expect lengthy periods of boredom but I can´t honestly say that I got bored. The time was spent by gazing out from the deck, watching one of the documentaries or films, eating and drinking, and chatting to other passengers. There was an interesting mix of people on the boat - old, young, gay, straight, from all over the globe. It was almost as if this was some kind of Big Brother type experiment, all types of people squished into a small space for a fairly lengthy period of time. Thankfully, I wasn´t evicted into the ocean. Neither did I have to ... read more

After Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales comes as a touristy town, but it is the nearest place to stay if you wnat the BIG national park, Torres del Paine. A three hour bus ride up to the park though, and then a catamaran ride across Lake Pehoe before you can even start. That gives an idea of the scale of this area. Saw lots of guanaco, surprisingly tame realtives of the llama and alpaca. Condors were easy to sport too, all quite awe inspiring. It was a wild and woolly day, as it often is in the mountains down here, but we managed a 4 hour hike along Lago Grey. The thing to do is to stay for a week and do the big trails. In spite of being at the end of the world this place ... read more

Having forced our hungover heads out of bed, we trudged to the bus stop. If proof were needed that cheap wine makes you suffer the next day then we were it. Well, Gemma was it actually. Today we headed to Punta Arenas, a much bigger city on the Magellan Strait. This is the stretch of water that separates Tierra del Fuego and Cape Horn from the mainland and is an important shipping route (because it avoids being ship-wrecked off Cape Horn). So we went through the usual routine: fight past accommodation providers aggressively loitering at the bus station, find somewhere to stay ourselves, dump our bags, decide to go for a walk to get our bearings and end up in a bar or restaurant within about 3 minutes ordering some food. We went to La ... read more

After a week in Torres del Paine we just wanted to relax for a day enjoying the simple pleasure that comes from knowing that hot food, a comfortable seat and a hot shower are all available if we want them. The day turned out to be not much more than visiting a few cafes and spending time on the internet. That is until the evening. Regular readers will know we've rather taken to a Chilean football team called 'Colo Colo' who have been enjoying a good run in the Copa Sudamericana of late. Tonight was the first-leg of their semi-final against Toluca of Mexico. We had been recommended a bar to watch the game in by one of the park rangers in Torres del Paine. It had 2 separate parts, a restaurant and a bar, so ... read more
