The most remote island? Located almost 4000 km from mainland Chile, and well over 2000 km from the nearest inhabited land (Pitcairn Islands), Easter Island has a fair claim to being the world's most remote place. Remote it may be but isolated it is not, as daily LAN Chile flights from Santiago and Tahiti, not to mention the huge numbers of tourists that visit, mean you never feel the solitude that... Our campsite was in a great location by the ocean. Fantastic sunsets, lovely scenery and even a moai!

This was the first part of the duathlon, which in turn is part of the Tapati Rapa Nui festival. The guy in front was shunted out of place by the two canoes from behind. And the crowd went wild!!

There is spectacular scenery along the coast line, such as this cave south-west of Hanga Roa, though you can only see this by walking, not on a guided tour.

You can walk most of the rim of this beautiful volcano. The pictured path leads to Orongo, where there are good views of the islands, and the remains of an old ceremonial village.

These tiny islands off Orongo village played an important role in the annual Birdman ceremony. The person to find the first egg laid by the sooty tern became Tangata Manu, or Birdman, and lived in a sacred house for a year.

Just one of the many moai at Rano Raraku. This one is found on the inside of the crater, less visited than the exposed side.

After being chiselled from the stone in Rano Raraku the moai were moved to temporary pits - holes in the ground - until they were moved to their ahu (platform) elsewhere on the island. This moai was never moved and seems to have sunk fairly low in the ground.

Great photos of Easter Island
Hi Barry Just writing to test we got your blog address right! The photos of Easter Island are amazing, I only wish we had the time/money to go there. After just 3.5 hours sleep we managed to make the 4am pick up for the Tatio Geysers this morning - they really are worth the effort. The thermal pool was bliss too. We´re now back in Calama before heading to Iquique tomorrow. Maybe see you and Ruth in Bolivia or Peru?? Happy travelling Gill and Andy

Rapanui Girls Constume and Tamure Dance
No grudges, no insults intended. I a school teacher from Solomon Islands and is interested to find the history of the Rapanui female tamure dance. I was at the 11th Festival of Pacific Arts in Honiara and for the same time came accross their dances. I am aware of the Cook Islands and Tahiti tamure dancing. Thank you.
