Absolutely wicked
Well, we spent a fairly uneventful week apart. Obviously I got pi**ed a few times with Mark whilst Steve settled into Sao Paulo and checked out the surrounding area. Finally flew into Sao Paulo on a grey rainy day which sums Sao Paulo up pretty good actually and Greyhead was there to meet me and escort me back to the hostel he was staying at. I am struggling to find anything good to say about the place other than its absolutely vast and and we met some cool english lads who travelled to Rio with us. Yes, another bus only about 8 hours. We booked a 6 bed dorm to ourselves (Me, Steve, Tom, Jack, Nick & Andy) at the Mellow Yellow hostel one block from Copacabana beach and had a quiet 1st night after our bus journey. Woke up to a pretty grey un-Riolike day and hired a couple of cabs between to take us up Corcovado and Sugar Loaf Mountain. Went up a very windy road to the top of Corcovado to see the statue Christo Redento (Christ the Redeemer) and had about 10 minutes of perfect clear weather before we were engulfed by a blinkin great foggy cloud

which was irritating from a taking pictures point of view. We actually bumped into Tom's mum and dad who were holidaying separately in Brazil after visiting him in Buenos Aires, very spooky! Piled back into the taxis for the trip over to Sugar Loaf but on the way the weather got decidedly worse and we had to call it off as we wouldn't have seen a thing. Ate at the hostel before going out and sampling the party atmosphere in Lapa, an area with tons of bars but everyone just stands outside in the street, there was about 6000 people there apparently. Met a couple of cool Brazilian lads who took us out the next day to Prainha beach which is about a half hour drive away. It was amazing, no gringos go there and we practically had the place to ourselves. It was a wickedly strong current and Steve nearly drowned a couple of times especially after we were trying to recover getting spanked playing beach football by the locals! Went out the following night with the lads and sampled a few of the local bars and clubs around Copacabana/Ipanema and were joined by a few more from the

hostel. Unfortunately one of the lads from the hostel pulled in one of the bars and disappeared back to the hostel. When I say 'unfortunately' I mean it was only when the night duty staff informed him that he realised his date was actually a man!! Our hostel barman Tulio or Tool to us, ended up taking us to a bar on Copacabana where we stayed til dawn. Next night we had a 'Capoiera' demonstration, it's a Brazilian martial art, and unfortunately they dragged us up but it was a good laugh. Next day we just chilled before going out to a nightclub out in the favelas, yes you heard me, the favelas. It was really cool and didn't seem unsafe at all, the worst danger was getting covered in sweat by some thrashing brazilians on the dancefloor. We did get one of the locals to let us pose standing with his gun though! 😊 I'll post that picture once one of the lads emails it on. (Hurry up Nath) Our last day was spent on a boat trip going around the bay. It was a gorgeous day and we spent it diving off the boat in between the barbecue
