The Pantanal

Well... those who didn´t think I (Alison) could have coped with 3 days covered in dust and being eaten alive by mosquitos were proved wrong this week as we headed out to the Pantanal (a swamp half the size of France and with more frogs suprisingly!). We went horseback riding (Katherine would be proud) through water up to the horse's neck and my horse turned out to be a bit of a nutcase! At first she was calm and followed the leader but then i had a race with an Irish boy and my horse decided that she was in control! I just clung on and tried to remember everything i know about horseriding (bugger all)!! But i squeezed with my knees and held on for dear life and somehow i managed to slow her down - she still wanted to walk 25 metres in front of everyone else though and i had no idea where we were going! We also went on a walk though the swamp and me and Simon had to go barefoot because our walking boots would have been ruined otherwise. After i got over the ´mud between your toes'feeling it was the ant bites which turned out to be the real problem! Those buggers are big! We also went Piranha fishing (hilarious photos of me with my piranha are to follow) and Simon was the only member of our group to catch something other than a Piranha! He caught a Bacu and apparently they can grow to about 3 feet long but Simon´s was only 6 inches (story of his life)! (Thanks alison!)

During the 3 days we saw howler monkeys (and got woken up by them calling to each other in the morning), an armadillo, caymen (like alligators), tons of birds, literally millions of mosquitos and we chased an Emu type thing (apparently called a Rhea - thanks biology boy) down the road for mile or so!!

Right... believe it or not we're going to Paraguay today to a money laundering town to buy a cheap camera - apparently it's what all the locals do! If you don't hear from us again then we're probably being stuffed with cocaine and sent back to Britain as drug mules! Anybody want some?!!!!!

Big love as usual to all and special love to Fifi whose birthday we sadly missed because we're lame!! (sorry dude - hope you had a good one? Will give the love when we return. Si). Big kisses xxxxx

We'll make a horse woman of you yet!
Alison, glad to hear that those lessons in Kim's muddy field all those years ago have now finally stood you in good stead half way around the world! Am indeed very proud of your riding skills :-) You should never race the Irish though, they're just too good at it! Glad you're both still having a great time, Rio sounds completely amazing and the swamp sounds swampy, but then I guess that's what you would expect. Good luck trying to find a camera and keep on enjoying yourselves. Katherine xx

Pantanal
Hiya It sounds like you're having an amazing time, apart from being bitten alive by most of South America's bug population. Piranha fishing sounds really cool. Hope that you enjoy Paraguay as well. Moving house went well and me and Jas are now home owners. Bloody scary stuff. Have fun, have to go and do some work now (unfortunately!)

Always knew Si had a midget one. No more bragging for you oompa-loompa-willy!!! (I imagine it might be tanned that orange by now)(Ew gross thought) Money Laundering is easy. Just dont let the stupid idiots in the bank know. Chances are you'll be linked with some illegal exchange of 'coconuts' and cocaine anyway, so you might aswell have fun while you're at it. Al
