maracana stadium
these were the cheerleaders of the opposte team, boa vista (which means good vie) thee girls had boa vista over their bums...they lost but im sure no one was that disappointed!! OMIGOD!!!! carnaval was so much fun... not sure i can fully describe the mayhem and euphoria that surrounds carnaval, and especially the festivities in salvador..unfortunately i cant provide any photos as all the guide books and people tell you .. íf you are going to get mugged in brasil, salvador is definietly the place it will happen´ i did take a disposable out though but you´ll have to wait for me to et them developed .. and someone tried to pick pocket me for it.. ha ha ha should have seen his face!! too smart for our own good me and farmer! i did have to barter for the digital camera..who knew you could do that in a shop-not sure i was very good at it but he put in a free toothbrush for me so i was satisfied with my efforts! ...
no one has any idea what goes on at carnaval its all a mystery and so confusing...as we have discovered the brasilian way of live is very laid back, but also chaotic. everything is made much more complicated than it needs to be and is done at snails pace..think they just expect everyone to know what they
re doing and arent going to help if you dont..its quite funny though-maybe its the chill factor tht gets you through.. anyway..carnaval: they have things called blocos which are moving trucks with some sort of artists on them and they travel down the streets with everyone partying and drinking along side them. but you can also buy tickets to be in the blocos (which are very well guarded by the way..its a rope carried by people who pester you for drink along the way, and if you give them a bit of money theyll let you in under the ropes..ha ha good glad i bought a t shirt for 70 squids then!! actualy i really am, the most expensive item of clothing i think i own and its a bright orange vest top...mmmm lovely!! but to get these t shirts, first you have to buy the tickets AND THEN you have to go across to other side of town (without getting robbed) get you t shirt in a warehouse somewhere thats in some secret location that you can ony get to if you know what youre doing, which we didnt! and then you have to get back to the hostel,
which a taxi cant bring you to because all the roads get closed off for carnaval without getting robbed for these shirts that our lke gold dust...we bought our tickets at 9.30 am and didnt get back until 4.30 pm.. there were 7 of us and not one us could figure out how to do it the simple way..but as we established there is no simple way in brasil!!
first night of carnaval we we walked out of our hostel into an all black parade and not just all brasilians-only black bahians were in this little parade around the streets...so always a good idea to rain on the parade!! they were absolutely lovely though-i even got given a tambourine lesson by one guy and played with the band, i say played - more kept at the back and told to keep my rhythmically challenged fat fingers as quiet as possible!! and we also joined this other bloco, where they had dancers out the front with four guys controlling everyones moves and making sure everyone was in time and together...well by this time cara and i thought that we were definitely jut out of strictly come dancing and could dance
rioiguazu 004
my first attempt at the panoramic setting..im working on it!! as well as an bahians...no no, no no!!we got laughed at but again, such nice people, instead of getting pissed off they showed us how to do it..admittedly they gave up and just let us do our own thing after about 5 mns and no success with the hip shakig movement that every girl from 9 onwards seems to be able to do..you think im joking we found these 9 to 14 old girls who were teaching us to shake our booties brasilian stylely (its definitely not going to happen..althouh after few caipirinhas-im pretty mush beyonce!)
the next night was ´tiesto´night, now i doubt that is a familiar name to anyone over 30 (no offence!) although me and cara didnt really know who he was either but hes a dutch dj who makes dance music, we were part sheep about it though coz everyone said he was amazing and we just wanted to be on bandwagon (got our street cred up though..ím so jealous you guys are going to tiesto-hes amazing´..ýes we know, we cant wait..so tiesto is aguy then not a group!!´we gathered information! but i think it was one of the best nights of my life-even if
you came back and smelt of other peoples sweat, and had been crushed under someones armpit..the name of the game was defintely to keep your feet though because if you fel, that was probably the end of you-there was so many people i cant describe it...
the following day someone thought it would be a great idea to stay up until 8.30am the next day.whe me and cara had to be out of the hostel at 12 and prepare for a flight dow to rio the following morning at 4.20...now we have been friends for a long time so luckily we were prepared for the ensuin grumpy, malfuctioning tiredness of both of us..only made worse by the fact that we got to the bus station in rio at 7.30, it didnt open until 9, and it was absolutely pouring with rain, and when we eventually got in we had to wait until 4pm for our 22 hours bus journey to the argentina...the tension was slightly nocticeable! but got to iguazu and after the hustle and bustle of carnaval it was so nice to see something that was so beautiful,
you have to see it from both side, the
argentinian side is better for the close up and the brazilian side is better for the overview...the brasilian side is definitely more peaceful and has less people (maybe because its so confusing to try and get into the falls that eeryone goes to the argentinian side for abit of order!) nothing prepares you for the devils throat though..the river leading up to this water fall is s flat and calm and then suddenly out of nowhere the ground falls away and the water just cascades down this cliff with such ferocity-im afraid no picture can do this justice....
we booked into an waesome hostel for less than we though, the receptionist even showed us the email we had sent then when we tried to argue that we had one more night..mmm!he did help us get a new hostel though and we confirmed with him that it had a pool (nt to rub it in but its sooooooo hot!) they guy said it did and off we went, booked in for the night, put our bags down walked outside fo a dip in the pool..not swimming pool...paddling pool!!!!!!
on a good note though we booked ourselve a coche carma
bus (first class - champage, full reclining seats, massive chairs, pleanty leg space, ect ect) all for 190 pesos, the grand total of 23 pounds!! off to beunos aires for some steak, red wine, tang and gorgeous men....life is soooo hard!!!
