After a troublesome sleep that night because of a painful tummy ache, I finally managed to find the courage to face going into the bushes. It was the beginning of the six-day long diarrhea. The previous evening we were talking about pumas, snakes and spiders - no wonder I feared meeting any of the local inhabitants alone on my way to the "loo", or worst, whilst!
I watched the sun rise above the rainforest trees on the other side of the river bank. Beautiful! Eventually, the pain subsided and I managed to doze off for another hour or two.
It rained throughout most of the night and during most of the morning. We waited until the rain eased off before disassembling our shelter and sailing back to the base camp.
Back at the main camp, we had some yummy fish for lunch. Hip, Hip, Hooray! No chicken! This was our lucky day as we had no chicken for dinner, either!
We used the afternoon to finish up our pretty "Made in the Amazon" necklaces. Vicky's was inspired by an image in the rainforest. Mine was based on the weird shapes that I tend to draw mixed
with some Amazon inspiration. Watch out for the photos from the Carnival!
The driver came to pick us up with the motorized boat, we said our good-byes to the cook and left the base camp for good. On our way to our luxurious lodge for the coming night, we saw five dolphins almost at once. First two appeared, followed immediately by another two jumping out of the water simultaneously and finally a fifth one showed its fin. This was the main excitement for this day, at least as far as wildlife is concerned.
The AmazonClub lodge screamed luxury from far away. There were chaise-longues on the quay. There was a nicely painted house with a veranda and nice furniture on it. Our room was called Caipirinha and quite rightly so! Our bedroom consisted of a large room with a double bed and a single bed with a large ensuite bathroom with not one but two sinks (!), a toilet and a shower with freezing water! Another downside, apart from the freezing water, was that the electricity was only available from 7pm until we went to bed. But that was more than we got anywhere else, which was none
at all! (You'd wonder why I needed electricity... well, how would I charge the batteries of the camera?!)
We went for a walk in the surroundings of the lodge. I was disappointed to see caged animals. There were a couple of monkeys and may be an anteater, I am not sure. Why did they have to be enclosed whist all their peers were running freely around them?! This view really upset me and sadden me.
The staff at the AmazonClub put out seeds twice daily for the birds, so that they gather around to eat. It turns out the reason behind all this is that the guests at the lodge get to see "wildlife", because this is as close that most of them would get to what the jungle life has to offer. According to the cook, they are typically rich people from Switzerland, Germany, Portugal or Spain, who come here to do next to nothing and enjoy themselves in various ways, which normally do not include visits to the jungle.
We went on to wander through the large purposefully made paths. Leo cut out some water liana for us to drink. This was the first time
I ever drank water from a liana. It was pretty tasty. The liana itself had a slightly sweet taste. This was not the only tasty thing this evening. We were treated to the most gorgeous bone fillet for dinner! With proper lovely salad and mashed potato with nutmeg as a seasoning. Oh, what gorgeous food! Vic and I even felt guilty for eating it. But hey, we paid so much for it! We wondered whether we should offer some to Leo, but then there was his girlfriend as well. Also, we thought that the cook may not appreciate us giving our food away. It was too delicious, as well, so I stuffed myself with it even though I probably was not supposed to eat much, if any of it considering my poorly state.
I was also served the strongest caipirinha ever! Vic barely sniffed hers and went to bed. The caipirinha was so delicious but even I couldn't finish it... too bad my tummy was not at its best.
