Parque Nacional Los Glaciares
Our first glimpse of the Perito Moreno glacier. 11 - 13 Marzo 2009
In a taco shell... El Calafate (or farties as we fondly refer to it) is an oasis town in a barren Patagonian landscape and access point to the spectacular Perito Moreno glacier in Parque Nacional los Glaciares.
In transit... A 5am bus from Ushuaia to Rio Gallegos (12 hours) where we stayed overnight to avoid arriving in El Calafate at 1am (far from ideal). It was a good move as it allowed us to check out a mid-sized non-touristy Argentinian city. A midmorning bus the next day had us to El Calafate in about 5 hours.
Digs... Marcopolo Inn. Once again, prices required us to take a dorm room with 4 fellow travellers, but the dorms were swish with an ensuite and all 😊
A great hostel run by hippies where they played Angus and Julia Stone.
We came, we saw... We watched a ginormous blue slow moving glacier creak, crack and crumble for 6 hours straight, which is a lot more exciting than it sounds- truly amazing!
City Highlights... We saw flamingos and made friends with a local dog we named Scrappy.
The glacier- it has to be seen to
El Calafate
Yep, pink flamingos. be believed- and the surrounding scenery.
City Lowlights... Another pricey destination.
Mental State... Getting a little tired. The long travels and broken sleep on overnight buses are starting to catch up with us. We're having early nights to ensure we make the most of our days 😊
Soundtrack... Angus and Julia Stone at the hostel- unexpected 😊
Flavours... Lulu tried a Bolivian meat and potatoes dish at the hostel- it was HUGE! Very tasty too...
No comprendo... Not knowing that they didn't have plastic bags (a good thing) at the supermarket meant juggling armfuls of groceries the 15min back to the hostel.
