We left Tafi del Valle via a quick visit to the Parque de Menhires - and nothing more. Headed up into the clouds over the 3,000m Infiernillo pass. Couldn´t see any of the views. As we dropped down on the Cafayate side of the hills the clouds lifted and the landscape became more desert like with the lush forests being quickly replaced by cardones cacti. We were hoping to stay at Quilmes to see the ruins there (see previous blog entry) but the dispute about land rights etc seems to have got worse. The access road is now blocked off with felled trees and scrub. Moved on to Cafayate for a quick rethink. Decided to start on the road to Cachi and stopped at San Carlos where we stayed in a rather funky adobe hostal. Very ... read more

Two days in Tupizain an impromptu camp space… lots of evidence of flowing water… assured a high spot…. Could not get to the ‘desired bush camp’ because the road had been washed out … Next morning packed everything up and tried again … no go… tools were taken out and the truck group in for road alteration. Took the side of the road off. Luckily the shale shattered at every blow of the sledge hammers and pick axe. The hard part was spreading the debris. Once the work was deemed satisfactory the truck tried to manoeuvre past the gapping hole. Truck too big. Truck too heavy. Road too soft. Truck almost careens off road and into the eroded hole! Fast retreat. The local workers had difficulty getting their small truck to the other side of ... read more

Yes, yes, I know, we’ve only just moved in yet here we are taking a weekend away already. Well, you’ve got to take the chance when you can as who knows what the work situation will be in a few weeks time. 5 hours from Salta is the town of Cachi, known as the gateway to the Cactus National Park. Coming from Salta, you actually go through the park first, so in our eyes it’s more like the back door to the park! The bus laboured up to Piedra Del Molino to almost 10,000 ft above sea level before descending a couple of thousand feet through the spectacular cactus valleys and finally reaching Cachi. After no problems in La Paz or San Pedro de Atacama, we were a bit surprised to find the altitude taking its ... read more

We arrived in Salta after a 16 hour bus journey from Mendoza so we were pretty knackered. Our first day was spent exploring the city which seemed to have a very South American feel to it compared to the more European feel that the rest of Argentina emulated. There was a lot of hustle and bustle in the main shopping street and the square was lined with an ornate cathedral, beautiful buildings and orange trees. The city came alive in the evening as alot of the buildings and churches were lit up with different coloured lights. On our first night we ventured to the outskirts of town in search of a parilla which we did not find but we did dine in a little restaurant owned by 2 doctors who ran it in the evening. We ... read more
