Having not slept very well on the bus from BA to Cordoba (due to it not being the full sleeper we were supposed to get) we were both very tired when we arrived. It had been two days since we had showered and we both felt grubby and a bit crabby. Jumping a taxi to our hostel and struggling through the very tiny doors that the colonial buildings have in south america we dragged our bags up the steep steps to reception. We were greeted by a very nice girl who told us a few minutes later that she did not have our booking. She could give us a room but could not confirm for our two night stay. We came to Cordoba on the recommendation of two Argentinians we met in NZ but had both been surprised in the taxi how big the city was. We sat in our room heater on full blast as it was freezing discussing our options and deciding that we would change our plans and only stay one night in Cordoba. Having showered and freshened up we were about to go out and explore when the girl came to say that we could stay two
nights. We told her we had changed our plans and left it at that. She did help us book our bus to Mendoza which was a great help.
Setting off in the sunshine Cordoba seemed relaxed and quiet. Lots of shops not open but heading for the main plaza we enjoyed a nice cuppa watching the world go by. Meandering through the streets away from the plaza we found ourselves in pedstrianised cobbled roads with little cafes that were also closed or in the shade. Desperate to warm up and enjoy the sunshine we wondered around some more looking for a place to rest our legs once more. The architecture in Cordoba was very pretty but we were struggling to find what we were looking for. In the end we settled for a little cafe in the shopping district where we had great fun with them not having a clue what we were ordering even though it was in our best practiced spanish. We go there in the end and enjoyed some ravioli and salad.
By this time we were both feeling pretty tired and even though it was only late afternoon picked up some sandwiches for tea
and headed back to the hostel to chill out for a bit. We watched a DVD and ate our tea a few hours later but most importantly we had a good nights sleep as we had been on and off buses for the last week and both needed it.
Having a lazy lie in the following morning we packed our bags up again arghhhhh and went in search of a cuppa as we were too late for breakfast. In all honesty breakfast is not a great event in south america with just bread rolls and jam or caramel spread but some places are better than others. We found we were actually in time and Tim ate his bread and jam and I just drank my tea watching the mummy on TV. We ended up watching the film until the end which is unusual for us as normally we would be out but I think we were just happy to relax for a bit.
As we were leaving on the bus overnight again at 10.30pm to Mendoza we asked to leave our luggage at the hostel. The girl arranged that for us but then told us that the
manager may choose to charge us for half a day as we did not leave our room on time. We both thought check out was 11am but it was actually 10am. We were both annoyed by this and said so and in the end to avoid any problems later in the day we took our baggage with us and locked it up at the railway station instead.
Walking back into the city took us about 30 minutes but it was pleasant and quiet as it was Sunday. We found ourselves back where we had been the following day and stumbled across another pedestrian area we had missed and it was really quaint. With nice eateries in the sunshine. We both settled at a table in the sun and soon found ourselves getting very hot over a cool beer. Enjoying a meal of lasagne and whiling the afternoon away chatting and planning other parts of the trip.
We had another wonder around the shopping area and then settled back at the area we had been all afternoon only at the place across the walkway which was cheaper!!!!! Soon it was 9pm and we headed off to the bus station.
It was a short stay in Cordoba and we used it to recharge our batteries. We had lots to do in Mendoza and it was only another 10 hours overnight on a bus just a normal journey in Argentina.............
