me feeding Einstein
He asked me what flavours I chose. I told him, "It's relative... in what reference frame?" Resistencia
Known for its sculptures and unbearable heat. This was my first exposure to 40+°C. I spent a good deal of the daytime in the hostel. I arrived on Saturday and found a very poor tourist infrastructure. I didn't expect anything fancy, but a tourist information office would have been great. I actually spent some time chasing a phantom tourist office because the locals don't seem to really know where anything is in the city and, if they do, they don't know how to give directions (this conclusion was not drawn carelessly - I had many instances to back my results). I arrived on Saturday at 7am or so and finally found a hostel at 3pm, with no map. Resistencia proved to be mostly a waste of my time. But the sculptures were nice, even though they were a bit too classical for my liking (in terms of theme and material). But I was able to share an icecream with Albert Einstein. That was nice 😊
The last night I stayed in Resistencia there was a party in the main square (plaza 25 of May, an important date in Argentina's road to independece, which was celebrated on July 9).
A traveling band consisting of vocals, bass, guitar, drums, and accordeon was playing their own music and some more popular themes, to which local couples danced their heart out. This event drew a large crowd and created a good market for the cotton candy sellers. It was a pleasant night.
On one stroll through the main square I realized that I was being followed. I kept an eye on the guy, a young guy, out of the corner of my eye to make sure he wasn't up to anything I didn't want. The I turned around, looked at him, and was returned a very strange look. He arched his eyebrows as far up as he could, giving him a comical yet creepy face. I just kept on walking. Then he passed me. I was starting to feel relieved, when he tried to converse with me:
Where are you from?
- Canada
Oh. Let's take a seat.
(a very strange suggestion, but I humoured him and sat down to chat)
(he looked me up and down)
Wow. You are very white.
- Thanks.
Where are you going to?
- Here and there.
(I didn't want to reveal my destination)
Where are you staying?
- Far away
(not a lie)
Do you have a girlfriend yet?
- Here?
Yah, to satisfy your needs.
- Ah... nope.
Why not?
- I don't have that need.
Oh.
(an awkward silence followed and a bit of small talk. Then I left)
I was hit on by a homosexual in Resistencia.
When I checked out of my hostel I was overcharged due to a mistake of theirs in their communication to me. I had a heated discussion with the manager over the phone and he threatened to come over with a cop to make sure I payed the full amount. So I hung up in the middle of his sermon, payed up and left. If you go to Resistencia, don't go to Residencial Los Fresnos, located at 30m from the bus station. It is not worth its ridiculous rates and poor service. Actually, Resistencia itself is not worth going to - avoid it altogether.
