This was our day to sleep in. However, we did get up at 10:00 AM in order to enjoy the breakfast in the Palace Alvear that finished at 11:00. Breakfast in L’Orangerie We had another great feast at L’Orangerie and this wasn’t even their ‘signature’ buffet brunch. There was cereals, toast, bagels, lox, cream cheese, eggs and pastries, champagne, fresh orange juice, and coffee. It was a good start to the day! Wandering the Streets of Bs As After breakfast we left the hotel and started walking to where the shopping area and flea market were located. It was actually a pretty good hike. The stores are located in a centralized area with the streets going east/west for cars and the streets going north/south blocked off for pedestrians. It was busy with local shoppers and tourists. ... read more

The wake-up call was at 5:00 AM and we left the hotel at 6:59 AM. This was the time to travel - the streets were empty and our directions from the hotel staff were impeccable. Avis Having crashed our first Avis rental car, we pretty much knew it would take a few minutes longer to return the second car. Yesterday, Avis asked us to give them an extra 15 minutes when we dropped off the car. We were at the Avis counter before they opened at 7:30 AM. A nice young lady arrived and we went to the car where she verified the mileage, etc. Back in the Avis office, she then pulled out the contract and looked at all the notes. She filled out a new charge and asked me to sign it. Then, she ... read more

Hola everybody! :) Just want to update you on what i've been doing the last few weeks.. First of all happy 21st birthday to my sister, Sarah! I hope you get completly wasted so that no one can recognize you, you're so funny when you get pissed, like at my farewell when you sang that song from Ghost, oh it gave me shivers... and by the way, you have so many fans! I am your biggest, of course... :) So, I eventually left Mendoza, had an incredible time there and met so many cool people. On approaching my last days there, Dave and I went on a day trip to Puenta Del Inca and Uspallata. Only four hours away from Mendoza, we decided the night before that we were going to catch a bus at 6am, ... read more

OK, so third blog of the trip and things are getting hazey, mainly due to the popularity of the Argentinian beer Quilmes, much better than the Brasilian Brahma, but back to the trip! From Puerto Iguazu travelled to to Posadas, which borders Paraguay, not much to see other than the waterfront overlooking the border, but stayed in a cheap hotel, Residencia Da Misiones, where a very helpful Swiss man who has been travelling for 15 years basically lives as a long term guest... he has to border hop to Paraguay every 90 days to continue to stay in Argentina. Sunday travelled to Santa Fe arriving at 5 am at the Terminal de General Belgrano... for all history buffs out there does 25 Mayo 1810 ring any bells?.... Answer: start of the revolution when Argentinia fought for ... read more

Week three highlights: After going out all weekend I woke up on Monday, did some spanish home work, went for a siesta (from 4pm to 8pm), read more Harry Potter (which I have finished) and then had a conversation with the girl at the front desk. IN spanish mind you. She is really into tourism and really wants to travel. I felt bad telling her about how long I have gone for, how long I will be gone for and where I will be going. Just not sure how feasible it is for her. Rugby practice was very, very tiring. Apparently the games that I missed on the weekend did not go well, and that always means a tough practice on tuesday...always. You do not have to understand spanish to know this. We were run into ... read more

I am sitting in the living room with a swollen belly filled up to the brim with potato leek soup (made from scratch...and not even a recipe!) apples with dulce de leche (carmel) and orange juice. i am thinking about how good it would be to just lay around and listen to this american life and for a fleeting moment be in love with ira glass just because of how he talks. ... read more

I had an accident at the hairdressers the other day. I can't tell if the problem started with the bald and bossy hairstylist or with the lack of communication. One thing is sure. I am 26 and I have an extreme mullet. I showed the man a picture of a girl with a lovely cute pixie mullet. Her hair was cut short on the top and sides in a pixie fashion....the back was long and wavy. I liked her bangs. They were piecey. I covered up the whole photo leaving only the bangs. I tried to explain that I wanted bangs like hers but only longer because of my calick. He asked me what I wanted to do with the rest of my hair. I was honest....I didn't know. He gave me a suggestion first "why ... read more

Hi all once again Well we have arrived. The bus ride was pleasant enough although didn’t like having to spend a day on the bus and just watch the day go without us getting out and about. On the way in we saw a motorway that beat even the LA highways. It was 6 lanes in each direction, plus two additional lanes each way on a Nippon clip-on kind of thing but not actually attached. It was insane and I can’t believe that they needed that many lanes. We have never seen so many Toll gates in such a small space of road, it seems every on ramp and off ramp has a toll but they are quick and efficient and only take a minute when there is a queue. We are staying at a cool ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Mar del Plata April 28th 2006

We left Mendoza on our favourite transport, the trusty bus!! We thought it would be a good idea to go to Rosario a riverside town on our way to Mar Del Plata. however when we go there we only managed to stay there for only 3 or 4 hours!!! It is a beautiful spot, but at the time there were absolutely no hostels/hotels available (unless we were willing to spend $100USD a night). It turned out to be an expensive place as we had to catch a taxi from the bus terminal to our "hostel" then after wandering about for a while trying to find more places to stay, we gave up and headed for the docks to catch a ferry across to Isla Invernada (an island just out of the city)......do you think we could ... read more
