Empanada heaven
The last day in BA is uneventful… that is, if you consider a thunder and lightning storm that causes flooding throughout the city uneventful. For us, it means that we couldn’t leave the apartment. In fact, the news anchors say that you should only go outdoors if it’s necessary. Stuck without food, we try to order empanadas for delivery. We look at the menu, make our selections, and OG calls the place. Nada! Their building is flooded. The next place…blank. The truck that delivers the raw material for making empanadas is stuck somewhere and not making deliveries. 0 for 2. The third place we call is up and running and gives us an ETA of 30 minutes. Those 30 minutes would become nearly 2 hours.

Meli has this look on her face like she is ready to go Survivor style. I know she likes my legs, but I could tell she was thinking, “drumstick!” We watch “Barber Shop” while we wait. That’s how we know how long the wait is, because we finish the movie and the food still hasn’t come. When the food finally arrives, we grub like little pigs.

We give OG an opportunity to redeem himself as a guest blogger. Again, disappointment! He’s got more excuses than a guy going to jail. I go to work uploading pictures. I don’t have the energy to write anything, so I try to be more creative with the captions. Meli takes a post carb overload nap.

For our last night in BA, we go to Anastasia, whose menu appears almost identical to Pancracia from two nights ago. In fact, they give us champagne after we were seated. Melissa is convinced they are sister restaurants, and after some questioning, it turns out they are! The owner has six restaurants in BA, and happens to be the friend of Victoria’s mother. Behind us, a couple gives PDA (public display of affection) a new definition. They are all over each other. “There’s no champagne in the sex room!” OG says with certainty. Meli and I crack up and wonder what OG has been drinking. The restaurant has a plasma TV not too far from our table and is showing a Boca game. I know it’s not polite to ignore dinner conversation, but the game is on. That’s how deep the soccer feelings are here. It’s ok to watch during dinner at

Meli banged her knee and fell
a nice restaurant; why else is there a TV on during dinner? The food is impressive. The steak special that I ordered is about the size of a porterhouse steak. The baked potato that it came with is just as big. Meli played it safe and went for the rib eye. For OG, the brochettes de lomo (tenderloin on skewers). A Saint Felicien cab-sauv is the perfect companion to the meal, with Luigi Bosca’s Syrah playing clean up.

By now, it’s midnight and we are supposed to meet up with Victoria and Manuel at a hiphop club, Areoz. Victoria has just called OG and told him she is there. What she means to say is that she is on her way. Or was OG too inebriated to hear accurately (reread his quote in the previous paragraph). A short cab ride over and we are there. A brisk summer breeze is blowing and kicking up dust. We are a little cold as we wait a few minutes for Victoria to arrive. The wait continues because her friend who will get us in for free has not arrived. Huddled up, we make small talk trying to ignore the cool hawk chilling

she slowly recovers
us. It took him about 30 minutes to show up. I was ready to pay the 20 pesos to get in, but we can’t be rude and leave everyone else. And the guy is on his way. Fine!

Eventually he shows up (1:15am) and gives us the comp tickets. The theme of the night is break-dancing, which goes on until 2am. The Argentine B-Boys (and one girl) take turns showing off their moves. The DJ serves up a variety, ranging from Tribe Called Quest to Kris Kross to Gangstarr to Vanilla Ice to Jay-Z. We get our groove on until about 4am and bounced. After all, our flight to Chile is in 8 hours.
