I Grandi Bronzi di Riace (The Great Bronzes of Riace)
June 12th 2018 When I saw them in 1983, in Reggio Calabria’s Museo Nazionale, the Riace bronzes took me by surprise. I’d never heard of them before. They are stunningly beautiful: two life-size naked bearded warriors exquisitely crafted in bronze. They are Greek in origin, from around 460 BC, two of the few surviving full-size ancient Greek bronzes (which in later times were usually melted down).
