Gas chamber and furnace No. 1 at Auschwitz.

There were several of these. As the camps were being liberated, the Nazis managed to destroy some in an attempt to conceal the evidence, especially at Auschwitz No. 2 or Birkenau, which camp was twenty times as large as Auschwitz. We were not allowed to photograph the basement but what we saw was horrific.

It is impossible to adequately put into words the experience of a visit to the Nazi extermination camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau here in southern Poland. We should all know the history, have read the books, seen film and accounts and are disgusted by the crimes that were perpetuated against the Jews in particular and others, but unless one visits this place it may remain just another page ... read more
