Every city needs its own personal phallic symbol, and Coit Tower at the apex of Telegraph Hill fills that spot nicely for San Francisco. Hidden gems
To think a tower could contain such gems of fantastic art depicting a pivotal moment in modern history...the Great Depression. Wonderful pics that set the page alight. Great blog Karen.

Thank you for your kind words. The murals were pretty amazing. Up close, they were full of visual puns and social commentary. For example, in the lunch counter panel, the waitress wears a blue Star of David. In the facing panel a rather dark menacing figure carries a box with the SS insignia on it. Even in 1935 these artists foresaw the menace to come in WWII.
