After 1800 miles and 29 hours of driving, we reached the stunning Death Valley National Park. Intermittent sheets of rain pounded on our car top as we drove from St. George, Utah through Las Vegas and up through Indian Springs where the rain was so hard, all vehicles had slowed to a crawl. Backpacking by Car

When my husband, Phil, and I decided to schedule a driving trip to Yosemite for a series of day hikes, I thought we should also arrange a visit and hike with a friend who lives north of Santa Fe. Our Yosemite visit would be mid-September, but our friend wasn't available until the end of October.
