Entrance Gate to Monastery in Glendalough
A person could remain in between these two gates and hide from potential enemies or from their sins for 40 days. The gates used to have doors and a roof over the top. After 40 days the person would have to choose between going back down the stairs into Ireland or going through the other gate and joining the monastery, no longer considered part of Ireland, but part of Heaven.
