Ok, the final verdict was over 50 sandfly bites ( see last entry). I am especially humiliated by the one which came up on the end of my nose ( how did they get away with it?!). Turns out you need DINT in your repellant, not DEET as for mossies. I got it wrong and paid the price. Oh no! Serious jetlag! Hence sitting looking VERY rough at a hostel internet terminal at Venice Beach, LA, at 5am while my roommates try to out-snore one another.Following much exhausting clucking and arm-flapping ( to no avail) I have learned lesson 1- don't try to discuss the current world situation of bird-flu if language differences preclude even swapping the most general niceties- it aint gonna happen!!
