It's now 40 years ago since Doctor Christian Barnard performed the worlds first successful heart transplantation. The patient, Louis Washkansky, was 55 and lived for another 18 days before he died in pneumonia. Still this was considered an enormous success in the field of life-extending surgery and sent Dr Barnard to surgery stardom.
