The massacre of the 23 Tennessee Regiment

A Confederate unit charged across this ground to take the trees in the left centre of the picture. They were ambushed by Union soldiers in the trees and hiding behind the stone wall. The confederates stood and fought suffering 89% casualties. There was so much ammo expended here the farmer who owned the land could not farm it for years after because of the amount of lead in the soil.
