Edit Blog Post
Even though we've been back a couple of weeks I thought I'd put a blog on to let everyone know what a great place and what a wonderful time we had in Samoa.
We spent the first 3 nights at a place called Vigin Cove on the main island of Upolu, we arrived in Samoa at midnight so had no idea what we were going to find till we awoke on our first morning and we weren't disapointed, it was incredible as the sun came up.
We had booked the honeymoon Fale (Fale "far-lay" basically a floor raised off the ground on poles with a thatched roof and woven flax blinds which you can raise or lower to control temperature, with just a mattress and a mosquito net inside....really basic but totally traditional)
From the bed of our our Fale we looked straight out to sea and from our balcony we just had to walk down 10 steps right on to our own private white sand beach.
Everyday the temp was 25-35 degrees and as it was getting close to monsoon season it seemed to rain evereyday at about 1-2pm for an hour which was quite pleasant as it helped to
take the humidity out of the air.
We spent our time at Virgin Cove doing absolutely nothing, just swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing, theres not alot to do there as its in the middle of nowhere but we both don't think we've ever been to a place so relaxing, we both loved it, breakfast and dinner is included and the food was excellent, its owned by a swiss man and his samoan wife and the service was spot on.
Our last day there was my 40th and during the night Dem had ballooned up our Fale which was nice.
We took a taxi from Vigin Cove to the wharf to catch the ferry over to Savaii.
Savaii is even more beautiful than Upolu, we stayed for 6 nights at Vacations right on the beach at Manase which is one of the islands best beaches.
Our first night there we cracked a bottle of champagne which we'd brought from duty free to celebrate my birthday and I then proposed to Dem much to her suprise, she ofcourse accepted so all good!
We had a excellent time there, we met some really nice people which we had some great nights with.(Hi Crock, Brenda,Mads,Harrison
and Griffin, also Dave , Lisa and Ann)
Also we made friends with Rene and Zita, they are a Swiss couple that moved to Samoa a few years ago, Zita runs the internet cafe/bike hire and italian coffee shop while Rene runs the beach cocktail bar as well as during the day he takes guided snorkeling tours either land based trips or for the more adventurous he also takes sea kayak reef tours and he also hires out sea kayaks and snorkelling equipment and all sorts of other water toys .
We went on the land based tour which we both really enjoyed, Rene shows you things you'd probably miss if you went out by yourself, things like the giant clams and trumpet fish and he explains the different types of corals, we had a really cool experience on our tour, as we were swimming along this huge school of tiny yellow fish just engulfed us and luckily Rene managed to get a picture with his camera.
We hired bikes from Zita and biked a couple of kms to the lava fields where the lava flowed right thru a couple of churches and then on to a place where you
can swim with turtles which again was an awesome experience.
On our last full day I hired a fishing rod from Rene and waded out 100m from shore out to by the reef where I stood in chest deep warm water to have a fish.
On my first cast i hooked one, what we in nz would call a mackeral, I was a bit far from the shore to wade all the way back in to take it off on the beach so with a bit of difficulty I managed to get it off the hook and let it go, on my next cast I again caught another one, Rene who had been watching with his binoculars from the beach bar had jumped in a sea kayak to come out and help me, with his help we got it off and put it in a catch bag he had brought out with him, next cast same result then another one then another it was getting too easy, within 30 mins we had 5 decent fish in the bag enough for a meal.
The thing I really wanted to do in Samoa was to go fishing and it was the best
half hours fishing I'd ever had.
Rene gave the fish to one of his Samoan friends and she cooked it up in coconut milk and that night we had a wonderful dinner on the balcony of the beach bar, it was a perfect end to a wonderful holiday, I cant wait till next year as when Dem goes home for her mums birthday I'm going back to get in a few more days fishing.
