The best flat white!
Flight Coffee Hanger in Wellington Tue: Wellington 1:25am night bus picked us up in Turangi and arrived on time at Wellington Railway Station at 6:30am. I got the front seat on the upper deck but sleeping comfort was far and away. Sore back and neck amazingly rejuvenated the moment I got off the bus. Our lodging was right across the street, yay. It was way too early to check in but the receptionist gave us the coins to use the lockers for our luggage 😊. Quick clean-up and off we went.
Stop #1: Flight Coffee Hanger. Super delish flat white and a slice of chocolate cake with a dollop of cream cheese, yum! Their flat white was nothing like others; milky yet not overpowering the coffee. The best of the entire trip! After a perfect jolt, we walked to Mt Victoria lookout via some of the steepest hills. My foot was still no bueno but V's Hoka bailed me out once again. Next up: Customs Brew Bar for flat white #2! This fancy cafe had hand-pours too. Oh shacks, is it already lunch time? Conveniently, we were just around the corner from Cuba Street filled with eateries. We ended up in Fidel's. I read
Yum!
Chocolate cake w cream cheese~~ @Flight Coffee Hanger that the street name was named after a ship rather than the country but Cuban fares popped up regardless, heck ya. We loved Fidels' ambiance!
With full tummy, we walked the city to the waterfront. Another gorgeous day! I even got burned. Waterfront was pleasant with little boutiques operating out of crates. Some touristy restaurants but not flashy. From the little that we saw, this waterfront was much more happening than Auckland. We were close to our lodging so we took care of some logistics for the next day and cleaned up for the evening outing.
We were set on checking out the raved craft beer scene in Wellington. Stop #1: Hashigo zake - underground bar that got filled up with after-work crowd. Both of our beers were amazing. Stop #2: Malthouse. It was pretty quiet but was equipped with more tap choices and some finger food. We got the first 2 that the bartender recommended because he didn't need to go any further. Amazing stuff. Since we didn't eat much, we went to raved Chow. It was one of the top picks in the guide book but we were going to forgo this place because we're not
big Asian fusion. Since it was just around the corner...why not. Pretty easy hangout.
As always, we made sure we left room for dessert but all bakeries and coffee shops seemed to have closed by 8pm, boo. Grab something at a restaurant? Eventually we found ourselves on Cuba Street again. We found Havana who still served coffee and sweets, yay yay!
Wed: Queenstown Omg, did we just took a cab to the airport? I don't think we've ever done that! But it was inevitable. Bus wasn't running until later and there was not much other option at 5am. Airport was surprisingly small. We checked in and boom, the gate. No security! It gave us more time for coffee and pastry 😊. It was this flight that we discovered Cookie Time cookies courtesy of Air NZ.
Through Christchurch, we got into Queenstown. If was hot hot hot! And flooded with tourists!! Reminded me of South Lake Tahoe on a holiday weekend. It was making me nervous!! :p. V picked Fergbaker, located next to Fergburger. When I saw the long line of people oozing out onto the street, my hair was standing. But! Luckily, Fergbaker was not
Fidel's
Cuba Street, Wellington Fergburger and there was no line for what we wanted, phew. We just had to cut through the line to get there. They have individual size (big tho!) meat pies that were super flaky, warm, loaded and fresh. Even I love it, haha! It's a good dough, seriously. We strolled toward north west to find tranquil and went back to Fergbaker for their sweets. Apricot almond slice and chocolate caramel mini tart...oof, put me over the top!
Gotta burn them sweets! Lakeside stroll toward west was very pleasant with stunning view of the lake with pointy mountains in the backdrop. It was so quiet too. We thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful rocky beach. East side, on the other hand, was pure beach resort. Bikini peeps were sardined on the same rocky tranquil beach on the other side...
Well, if there is casino and haunted house despite beautiful scenery, I don't care much for the town. We got the car and made a grocery run for tomorrow. Dinner was Fergbaker attack #3. It's that good. But let's not end it there. #4 for flan! Sooo stuffed.
