South Island Route

On the way to Twizle from Geraldine there are many stop off points for a bite to eat and views looking out across crystal blue lakes, and views of Mount Cook, New Zealands largest mountain.

I've just come back from visiting the south island of New Zealand and it certainly lived up to all the expectations I had created based on all the great things I had heard from kiwi's in the north. First arriving in Christchurch and luckily not having the chance to visit the red zone where all it's current devastation still remains visible. I travelled down to Wanaka which feels like untouched land. Its main feature is Lake Wanaka which appears crystal blue. Oh and a must stopping point along the way to Wanaka is Lake tekapo where an iconic church stands looking out at rolling mountains with white snow caps glittering in the January sun. A picture postcard view also on the way to Wanaka is at Lake Pukaki where Mt Cook (tallest mountain in New Zealand) is clearly dominant over the blue lake. After spending a few days in Wanaka, river boat riding to places filmed In Lord Of they Rings, and helicopter ride to the top of a mountain, I moved onto Queens town to discover why its a must see / place to visit. Once again not disappointed Queens town is said to offer the opportunity to do any activity you desire. After taking the gondola up the side of a mountain we had fun on the luge, which is a purpose built race track which runs down the side of the mountain and finally concluding with a zip wire adventure through the beach trees giving us a full scale view of Queens town and the mountain known as the Remarkable. You can also visit the bungy jumps two which are only a 10 min drive out of the main centre, which I think is a must see just to walk across the bridge to look down and see what all bungy jumpers first see after jumping. Im returning to the south island in April 2012 to see the Wanaka airshow and try out the three day bike trail. This will be blogged on on my return 😊
