We arrived in Nelson on the 2nd Feb at about 7am, we couldn’t check into our hostel till about 1pm(ish) so had to find somewhere to go until then with all our luggage, we went to a coffee shop that had wifi which was brilliant, spent all morning on the net and I also spoke on phone to mum for over a hour was really good. We then realised that we didn’t actually know where our hostel was so we looked it up and found out it was ages away from where we was, we had loads of stuff as well so it wasn’t going to be a easy walk. Paradiso was about a 15 minute walk outside of the centre, but it did have free breakfast and evening soup and a swimming pool, sauna, spa and volley ball court, was amazing! We had the best week there sitting by the pool all day, though our room wasn’t the best and one of the days Tracey’s suitcase got infested with ants so she had to wash everything in there and then wash out her case, the room was also then infested so we got moved, but they only had a room
left in the lodge not in the backpackers so we had an amazing room for 2 nights, with our own bathroom, tv and kitchen area, luxury for us mere backpackers!
On the 4th Feb I went out job hunting, found a job in a nightclub/pool hall called Shark Club and I had a trail shift that evening, went really well so was offered the job which was working on the weekend evenings, was brilliant loved working there, all the staff was really good fun and made me feel really welcome, plus we was allowed to drink while we were working!!! A few weeks after starting at Shark Club I also started working in the owners other business called Plan B which was a cafe/restaurant.
After a week at Paradiso we decided it was to far out of town to be walking home after work as both Tracey and Alex got jobs in a restaurant called Fords where they worked evenings as well, we found another hostel right in the centre of town which offered us a really good rate called Bumbles, we moved there on 9th Feb. When we got there the owner gave us a choice of 2 rooms,
one inside the main house or another which was in a building in the back but had its own bathroom, we chose that one, though it was like a prison cell and had loads of things broken etc, including the door which actually broke one morning when we tried to leave the room locking us in there, was really not funny as the owner had to take the lock apart to get us out so we were trapped for a while! We were also getting eaten alive by bed bugs so decided we had to get out, it wasn’t easy as there wasn’t many hostels in Nelson that offered a good rate!
We eventually found a hotel/hostel called Finns which we moved into on 16 Feb, it wasn’t that much better, had a really small kitchen but was the same price so we decided to give it a go! We then realised that we had actually taken the bed bugs with us so again had to try and find somewhere else to go, we then found yet another hostel called Honey Suckle House so we moved there on 23 March, this was slightly more expensive and a little further out
of town but it was really nice and homely! We stayed here until we left Nelson on the 9th April.
On the 8th March Mark, Wendy, Matt and Ella arrived in Nelson, they also stayed in Finns with us, that night we all went for a quiet few drinks in Shark Club and had a few games of pool. The following day Me, Mark, Wendy, Matt and Ella went to go to the Wearable Art exhibition but when we arrived we realised it was really expensive so decided to just go for a drive, we stopped for a drink and then went to the beach, was a good day, that evening we all went out. Decided to have a separate girls and guys night out, us girls went to Lone Star for food then around town for some drinks, we did end up meeting up with the guys as Nelson is so small! Was a brilliant night and I had to take Wendy to bed as she was being sick, lol! The following day we didn’t do much as everyone was feeling a little worse for wear, me, Mark and Wendy went for MacDonalds for lunch and it took Wendy
almost a hour to be able to eat her burger, a first for her I think! The following day Mark and Wendy picked up there hire car and took off for the west coast and Matt and Ella left for Christchurch.
On 2nd April we walked up to the centre of New Zealand with a friend from work, was only about a 20 minute walk but had amazing views of the whole of Nelson and you could even see over to the Abel Tasman, was beautiful. The following day Tracey left Nelson to go meet Alison in Auckland who was coming over from home to visit her for a few weeks, they travelled down the North Island back to Nelson to meet back up with me and Alex, they got to Nelson on 8th April, we had a last night out in Nelson, went to Fords for a meal and then out for drinks.
