My knees completely gave out on the NW circuit. I spent the last 2 days trying to walk without bending my knees. So we ditched the packs and hired some kayaks instead. Paterson Inlet is a great place for kayaking and just a half hour walk from Oban. The West side of Stewart Island is apparently tilting up leaving the East side sinking under the ocean. This means a lot of the valleys on this side are being drowned, a recipe for great kayaking. There are heaps of bays and islands, and lots of rivers to look around. We spent a fabulous afternoon in the sun paddling about, seemingly the only ones on the water (apart from the blue penguins). ... read more

After a brief trip to Wellington and Auckland for weddings and visas, we headed down to Stewart Island with our friends Linda and Gerad to do the North West Circuit. At the time, it seemed like a good idea to do the Southern Circuit as well. So, once again, we donned huge packs and set to it. (Maybe we are getting a bit lighter, but it seemed easier this time). Stewart Island is amazing. The North West Circuit skirts the coast in a big loop from Oban (the main township there). The trip is supposed to take around 10 days. The first part was on the great walk, and this was agony in boots with a heavy pack. Under the pier at Port William, an enormous blue cod swam around, laughing at Ben for forgetting his ... read more

On the 7th we left Mark's and drove to Wanaka for the night. The drive to Wanaka took us through Haast Pass which passes through Mt. Aspiring National Park and Young Ranges. There was some great views of huge snow covered mountains and crystal clear water. We also stopped at a couple waterfalls along the way, and drove along Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea. We spent the night in a campground in Albert Town along side the Clutha River. The next morning we headed into Wanaka to see if there was anything we could do, but found out there really wasn't so we headed for Winton to catch up with Geoff and Mariann (they were on the same African trip as Kendra). We took the long way to get to Winton and drove through the Otago ... read more

היא ... read more

Happy New Year Well we're now a couple of weeks into the New Year and within the last 23 or so days before we leave. I'm back at work after a very pleasant and relaxing break while Emma continues to holiday it up. Work is pretty quiet as I'm not being given any new work to do and am almost finished all the work I've got. Not sure how I'm going to fill in the next three weeks. Probably do a fair bit of internet surfing and solitaire playing, waste some more rate payers money, you know how it is. Christmas was a pretty standard affair this year. The day here in Invers was pretty overcast but warm and included the usual family get togethers and over indulgences. Emma spent the day in Christchurch with extended ... read more

So i've made it down to stewart island where it is FREEZING COLD. I'll be tenting for the next three days and well, of course, it rained last night, yuck! I arrived to the island at about 4:20 pm yesterday after a long day of rain in INVERCARGIL (my stop from Queens-town and my wait for my flight out to stewart island)....the bus from queenstown had dropped me off at the invercargil Information center/Museum....and I had to wait 4 hours until my flight. But one thing, I had to get to an ATM fast bc they have none on the island....so forgetting my much needed rain jacket at the info center, I walked stupidly in the Sparse town of Invercargil, yes, getting drenched, looking like an idiot and feeling like one too, at some point i ... read more
