Cabin fever is a recurring problem that I have here in Lake Tekapo. Yes the town is beautiful and I have some great friends here but the lack of things to do here sometimes can be a bit of a drag. So most of us here are always trying to plan some little getaways on our days off. This week a few of us had the same days off and decided that this was our chance for a little road trip. Sarah, Laura, Sofia and I were all set to go to Queenstown but there was one problem.....we had no car. But after asking around we found ourselves a loaner car. We had no plans for Queenstown, we were just eager to walk down busy streets, have a selection of restaurants and bars and even take money out of a bank machine.
It was midday on Wednesday when we all piled into the little car. We were like four little children who couldn't sit still. We joked and laughed our way through our three and a half hour drive in the afternoon sun. Plans of food and cold beers in busy bars. We stopped at the AJ Hackett bungee place
to watch some people jump off the bridge ( I don't know why it's so fun to watch other people plummet towards the river below). Then into Queenstown with our first stop being the famous Fergburger for some burgers. We found a hostel easily and dropped our bags off and went for a walk. Now after a couple months of walking the quiet streets in Tekapo, the busier streets of Queenstown were exciting. We picked up some beers and went back to the hostel. Because there were four of us we had our own 4 bed room. My friends Phil and Mike (who I know from my time in Welly) were in town so they came over for a few drinks. Wednesday night was a night for drinking and we drank a fair amount of beers. I remember by the end of the night most of us were on the dance floor at the World Bar dancing it up to some 90's rap (turns out I like 90's rap when I am drunk). It was so much fun.
Thursday morning I was the first one up and went for breakfast and a little walk. The weather was rainy so
my usual leisure activities of sitting on benches and drinking coffee were spoiled. So I went into some shops looking at things I wasn't going to buy. By the mid afternoon we were all reunited and looking for something to do. Because the weather was rainy we decided to take the gondola up the mountain. Since we were going up the mountain we decided to go on the luge carts. My last experience on these carts was embarrassing as I hit the wall and was ejected from the cart while the people on the chair lift watched from above. This time was less embarrassing. It was snowing so the track was slippery but we took the scenic track and enjoyed the views while our hands got only colder and colder. We warmed up with some coffees and lingered in the cafe with the view. The rest of the afternoon was quite realxing and uneventful. After we got back in town we took a scenic drive to try to get some nice pictures.
Thursday night was less party for me. Sofia and I met Mike and Phil for a couple pints at an Irish bar. It was my last chance
to see see these guys as Phil returns back to Welly soon and Mike back to England. After a few pints we enjoyed some Fergburger and said our good byes once again. We left Fergburger and started to our hostel only to bump into Sarah and Laura who were well into party mode. So we were talked into going to another bar. I had a much more modest night this night and only had a few drinks. I didn't participate in the dancing maybe due to lack of alcohol or due to lack of 90's rap. But I was home at a reasonable hour.
We all worked on Friday afternoon so we had to get up at a decent hour. By 11 we were all in the little car driving away from Queenstown. Laughing about how much fun we had. It was good to be a tourist again, to take pictures, to consider buying useless souvenirs and to just have fun in a different town. These two days were a blast as they were a much needed mini vacation. I wish I had that much fun everyday.
