I didn't even plan to go to Dunedin, but the bad weather in the west coast convinced me to drive east. It was a good decision! I had so much fun here that I stayed 3 days and was so sorry to leave, but the flight to Sydney was coming and there was no other choice. I arrived in town on Friday afternoon after a long beautiful drive from Wanaka. The first brochure I found in the information center was for a ghost tour! I decided to do that one. Just before the tour started I got a text message telling me I had a new niece! Congratulations to my brother and his family! And then Andrew arrived, our ghosts guide. He was properly dressed in a black suit, with white shirt and white umbrella, very ... read more

Wednesday morning was a beautiful one, the blue sky returned, and I headed to Glenorchy to go on a Dart River trip on a jet boat. The booking office where I booked the trip made a mistake - I wanted to go with Dart River Safaris, and they booked me on Dart Wilderness, a different company. I was a bit angry when I discovered that in the morning but eventually it was so great, I was lucky again... First of all, I was the only one on the boat that morning, just me and Kirk my driver. Dart Wilderness definitely has a great marketing problem - at the end of my trip I even gave them some ideas why their brochure is not that good and how I think they should improve it. That was interesting! ... read more

Queenstown is in a way the embassy of Australia in New Zealand... in a way means the beer way. It's one of the only places at least in the south island that you can actually go out in the night, there're plenty of pubs, clubs etc. On our first night here Marie and me stayed in a lousy hostel (Flaming Kiwi - highly NOT recommended) but found there a bunch of nice English guys so we had a good drinking night. The following day was a total chill out day, enjoying the nice weather although in the afternoon it got quite overcast, for the first time since I arrived to New Zealand. In fact, at night it rained and snowed on the mountains, so the next day the mountains around were even more beautiful, with heavier ... read more

I climbed a mountain today. It's the most awful thing I've ever done in my life. Also the most rewarding. It was called Mount Roy, and is 1,578 meters of rocky, grass growing, ice and snow infested hell. I hate it. The path up it is 8km, and according to the Lonely Planet guide Casey and I bought (an essential part of any excursion into the unknown) it is a 3 hour hike up "for the fit". So I expected a good 4 hour or more climb with plenty of breaks and sit downs. Nick the hitcher is still with us, and turns out he and Casey are both pretty well fit. I didn't discover this until the seeming 20 thousand times I stopped to contemplate if I wanted to say "f**k these guys, I'm going ... read more

Aahh...Queenstown, known as the adventure capital! Basically it's the Vail of New Zealand. A beautiful mountain town with all the outdoor activities one could ever want where everything is overpriced and everyone is gorgous. I went on another LOTR tour today and tomorrow I am hoping to paraglide, but the weather may not be in my favor. For those of you who missed the best rugby match ever (probably everyone reading this), the All Blacks have won the Lions Series! While there is still one game left to play tonight decided the winner with the All Blacks overcoming all of the whining and controversy the Lions dished out. It was brilliant! I was a little sad that I was going to miss the 4th, but I just happen to be in Queenstown during the winter festival, ... read more

Hi Guys, Well finally the last installment of my exciting semester of travels. What a lot of fun! All in all I was away for 5months and had such a fantastic time I really can't wait to travel again. It was a great thing to do before starting the med school marathon, and it was very special to meet up with old friends, and certainly to make some new ones. So to all you wonderful people out there, I hope you're all well, happy and smiling, cos I sure am, every time I think of you :) Thank you all for reading about my adventures, and huge thank yous to all those who helped me get there, those who I had great and memorable times with along the way and those who made this trip so ... read more

So I arrived in Portland on Friday afternoon having flown from Rome to Frankfurt and then on to Portland direct. I had two enormous people sitting beside me, but luckily I was on an aisle. The lady right beside me was also scared of flying so I spent all of take of and landing chatting with her and trying to reassure her that she would in all likelihood see her grandchildren again. Poor thing. At least she was doing it! I navigated into the city on the MAX line. Portland has this great integrated transport system, with these cool train things that are sort of like trams/trains/buses combined. Groovy! Then I trekked for a few (by a few I mean MANY!!) blocks with all my luggage (I missed having Eamonn to lift things up stairs and ... read more

I know, I know - such original titles....to bad....i have to get this done before my creative juices completely dry up! So on wednesday (Jan 26) Torse, Eamonn and I made the big trek over to Vatican City, on the other side of Rome. We hadn't thought it would take us too long, so we got off the bus quite early to walk alongside the Tiber river, and to look at the Castel Sant' Angelo (anyone read Angels and Demons??) and the beautiful bridges that cross the river. The Via della Conciliazione is breathtaking. It is long, bustling and at the end of it looms St Peters. We have seen few if any man made sights so impressive. The square too is imposingly large, the columns are astounding, but it is made almost homely by the ... read more

Well, so much for finishing Italy! I wrote Part 1 and completely forgot that I hadn't done the rest! So anyway, we caught a train at night from Florence to Naples, and eventually made our way out of the station and through the very dodgy station area to our hotel, which was nice and close, though through a very stange little door-within-a-door, into a courtyard where residents parked their car and up a pay-per-ride lift! Luckily the hotel was run by the most charming old Italian man called Mario. For some reason (though we were paying very little) we were given a suite, with 2 bedrooms, great bathroom, eating area etc all with marble floor and the hugest bed we'd ever seen! It was honestly about 2x the width of a normal double bed. Mario brought ... read more

At the end of the last blog I said there was too much to put into one, so here's the second part: We left Invercargill on Friday morning and spent the day driving through the Catlins, the south-east corner of the south island. The Catlins are a pretty coastal area with lots of nice bays and beaches, even beaches where you can swim with dolphins in the surf - typically only in summer though. The Catlins were nice to drive through, but there wasn't much to do - some of the 'towns' we drove through didn't even have a corner shop in them... We decided to head for Dunedin, a week early since we have to be back there for the Lions vs Otago game this weekend, but I had a cunning plan for all that ... read more
