The view from our lodgings
Moving further south to the coastal hamlet of Moeraki, made internationally famous in recent years following a visit by Rick Stein to a local fish restaurant called Fleurs' Place. The photo shows the place from the outside and belies the internal structure of massive wooden beams with dining in the rafters or downstairs in the bar area. Fish and seafood are supplied daily by the local fishermen and fruit and vegetables are sourced locally with nothing on the menu coming from more than 30 miles away, even the cheese. Our meal was truly magnificent and better value than we have had anywhere. I had 3 john dory fillets and Sue had sole fillets between which were sandwiched with gravadlax. Fleur was a wonderful host and even offered to run us back to our lodging but we needed the exercise to walk off the large meal.

Went to the Moeraki boulders the following day. These strange spherical rocks were formed millions of years ago by a process similar to that of an oyster creating a pearl. They are formed underground then exposed by soil and sea erosion but it looks as though they were dropped in place.

It was never like this when I went fishing. A local boatman returns in style and even manages to let his wife know he's home safe.

Widow Twanky keeps washing them every 2 days so I have not unpacked my big bag yet. Promise I will sport new togs when we return to the North Island on Tuesday.
