Mitre peak
the stunning centre piece for Milford sound New Zealand keeps on getting better and better, every place we go we see something new and unique that we haven't seen before it is just simply wonderful!
Well from the last entry we yet again have done so much.........The weather cleared up for the day in Queenstown so we were able to take the walk up the hill, which if you go or have ever been you will know which hill i mean, the one with the gondola on the side for the lazy people ha ha ha! we walked it anyway it took about an hour or so but the views are so worth it! you get a great view of the surrounding areas as well as Queenstown itself. Up here the 'Luge' is situated. the luge is basically a three wheeled kiddy cart that you roll down a track on whilst getting stunning views if you dare look off the track! they make you do a scenic route before you go onto the advanced track which is just slightly steeper. we got helmeted up and were away it was great fun! We could have gone around there all day. we then went to take a look at
Queenstown
The views from the 'hill' of the remarkables and Queenstown the bungee jumping......as it was a nice day there were loads of people throwing themselves off the high platform attached to a rubber band! I or Ste would not do it but it was so funny watching other people swearing and one poor lad kept chickening out, which i can not blame the guy in the end after numerous attempts the jump supervisor pushed him! ha ha ha.
We left Queenstown and its expensive price tags behind and headed to Milford. As i said in my previous blog the tracks have been shut due to so much damage. When we arrived the weather was still fine and we camped but still the tracks were closed the lady in the conservation office told us that we would need a miracle to walk them! typical. The Milford road however that takes you to Milford sound has so much to offer as well. the day we arrived you needed snow chains for the car and the road had been closed......luckily the day we woke to drive the road it was clear no chains needed so we were off! The drive takes about 2hours non stop, but obviously you spend a lot of
Mirror lakes
The mirror like waters reflect the views of the snowy mountain tops time stopping for the painted backdrops that NZ has to offer more huge snow capped mountains, avalanche zones in which we saw 2, mirror lakes that really are like mirrors, then the real cherry on the cake Milford sound! You are rewarded with mitre peak, a cone shaped mountain with a jagged piece missing at the peak that looks like it had been sprinkled with icing sugar! The surrounding mountains are just as impressive the whole scene is just something you can not put into words you have to see. Upon returning through the homer tunnel, a tunnel that was built in the 1930's and has not been changed since hence a slight degree of fear when you drive through it's black narrow road with it's very own set of waterfalls inside we drove to the Catlin's.
The Catlin's are like Cornwall to me rolling headlands, clean deserted beaches and the best thing no people! We camped on one of the headlines in Curio bay a place that is well known for it's yellow eyed penguins and fossil trees. there is a small cove which is full of what look like rock but in fact they have 120million year
The Kea bird
The alpine parrot of Nz that are very nosey! old fossilized trees they look like wood but feel like rock its mad. We sat and waited for the penguins to come in for the night but we were told that they are very rare as they are endangered animals and they are very shy. Unfortunately we didn't see any that night. We drove to a place called Nugget point where again is well known for the yellow eyed penguins.........we did it in true Bill Oddie style in a hide we watched over the beach and bingo a little cute penguin made his way out of the waves and up a hill to the side of us to his nest, incredible!!!!!! we were so lucky to see him.
next stop Dunedin..................
