So today, our main goal was to check out the Pancake Rocks on our way to the Brew Pub at Lake Mahinapua! More on the pub and it's history later... The Pancake Rocks are on the wind and weather battered westcoast and after we left Westport in the morning, our bus dropped us off at Foul Wind Cape, so that we could go for about 1 hour walk on the coastal track, past the sea lion colony. Luckily for us, we had super weather, which is quite rare in these parts of New Zealand, where they experience 7 m of rain a year, and the little walk gave us a chance to take more great pictures of the coast. Hello again all! Time for a little update! After the delights of Nelson and Abel Tasmin National Park, we headed to Westport, which apart from the lovely hostel we stayed in, really had no delights what so ever so I won't write about it! I'm not sure how the manager of this place managed to negotiate this deal, as every kiwi experience bus stops here bringing people with no choice of where to stay and no choice of where to eat or drink, so it must be a ... read more

No, this isn't about me making out with some green space alien or anything like that. Hell its not even about me making out with anyone. Its Friday night and I find myself camped at Lake Mahinapua, about 10Kms south of Hokitika. Since Tuesday when I left Murchison I have just been driving the West Coast. Went up to Karamea... and camped on the beach, listening to the waves Thunderously crash. I also went and visited some limestone arches that were way cool. One was called the Gates of Moria. Not sure if it was used in the movie or not, but it easily could have been the few from inside looking out. Oh and then on down to Punakaiki and the pancake rocks. Here I found the most glorious place to free camp. I just ... read more
