Day 40 Hokitika

Today we tried to go white water rafting down the Buller River, but unfortunately there were not enough people to join us which was a real shame as it is famous for its grade of river and is in flood at the moment. We travelled further south to Charleston to try to go and see the glow worms cave while riding on water in inflatable tubes, unfortunately this was full as well so it we were destined not to get wet or have any adventure trips today.

Quite disappointed we continue south along the coast and stop at Pancake Rocks which are interesting rock formations that look like layers of pancakes! We called at the beach at Greymouth to have some lunch before heading to Hokitika.

This small coast town was dead despite being Saturday afternoon, nearly everything was closed. The weather had been sunshine and showers all day and just as we arrived at Hokitika a heavy rain storm blew in. Once the sun was back out we walked along the beach into town for a beer. This town is famous for Jade, the green stone is massive business here and they mainly manufacture jewellery

When it turned dark at about 9pm we went for a walk to the natural Glow Worm Dell which was just up the road from our holiday park. You can only see the electric blue light of a glow worm in the dark and they like damp places which is why they are mainly found underground in caves. Here though they were just up a short path in some undergrowth and very easy to find in the dark, we would show you the photos but glow worms are camera shy!!
